Danish term

satspuljemidler

Danish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Please could someone confirm whether I am right in thinking that this means "lottery funding". If I am wrong, please could someone put me right? There is no context, it is on a list.

Discussion

In my comment, I meant to put "you all told me about something I had not been aware of" - somehow I missed out the "not" - but all the feedback is really appreciated!

government fund for social purposes

'Satspuljen' dates from 1990, when the so-called 'dyrtidsportioner' were abolished.

These were automatic increases in pay and certain other allowances, intended to counter increasing expenses in the cost of living. They were originally seen as a temporary measure, but in practice they fed inflation and were never withdrawn. (Prices never fell back to the level of before the 'dyrtid'...)

So the 'dyrtidsportioner' were frozen, i.e. paid into a fund, which was supposedly to be distributed on an ad hoc basis to social causes to benefit the really needy, and this fund became the 'satspulje'.

Here the word 'sats' is as in 'rate' or level of subsidy, not 'sats' as in lottery ticket.

Lots og hits on 'satspuljen' but they are not all terribly illuminating!

Hope this helps...

There is a fund from lottery contributions, which is also used for social purposes, but that is called \'tipsmidlerne\' or \'tips- og lotteripuljen\'

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I would like to thank everyone for this! You also told me about something that I had been unaware of. In the end, I asked my client and she said she preferred "government funds". I am so pleased I did not rely on my "guess", which was "lottery funds"! "

satspuljemidler (monies from the Danish Fund for the Disadvantaged)

No, it has nothing to do with lottery.

Federal funds

There are many federal funds available for different purposes. The most common of which is Department of Social and Health Services. If you don't need a special section of government funding, then you might be able to use the general all encompassing term - Federal funding or federal funds.
