(questa mi convince di meno, perché di solito in italiano sono fatti o personaggi a segnare il corso della storia, più difficilmente luoghi.)

"è stato teatro di vicende storiche importanti/di spicco/di rilievo"
(quest'ultima giusto un'idea volante)

Dando un'occhiata al testo completo mi accogo che si parla del Friuli come terra contesa fra più popoli. Secondo me il senso è quello indicato dalle mie proposte.

La difficoltà della traduzione qui sta nel rendere il concetto nella maniera brutale, oserei dire quasi grezza, dell'inglese "hard in the path", noi abbiamo bisogno di esplicitare di più, non ce la facciamo a essere così condensati, nudi e crudi.

E non bisogna dimenticare, tra l'altro, che questa collocazione "to be hard in the path of" è decisamente inusuale. Basta fare qualche ricerca con google per rendersene conto.


Ecco la parte di testo significativa per capire meglio il senso espresso:
