Allison Wright (X) May 20, 2011:
Deep-rooted *never* "deeproot" or "deep" Correct English expression: deep-rooted.
e.g. a deep-rooted tree
or
A tree has deep roots.
A tree is deep-rooted.
Kate Parahina (asker) May 20, 2011:
MariyaN (X) May 20, 2011:
En-Rus or am I missing something?
Allison Wright (X) May 19, 2011:
Stephanie makes a good point. Botanical descriptions can be, dare I say it, somewhat prone to omitting essential detail!
Lilia_vertaler May 19, 2011:
Stephanie Ezrol May 19, 2011:
Black poplars are noted for their deeply etched bark. It is possible that your text is speaking in shorthand so to speak. That phrase only shows up in a very very small number of websites which makes me think that the authors of the text are being unclear or leaving out words.
Lilia_vertaler May 19, 2011:
Kate Parahina (asker) May 19, 2011:
What could mean "deep" in this context?

black poplars are large and tall/deep-rooted

I two feelings:
1. The author meant to write "tall".
2. The author meant "deep-rooted".
I asked the Internet "Do black poplars have deep roots?"
It appears they do:

You cannot use "deep" on its own, though.
Note from asker:
Thank you for you explanations.
Peer comment(s):

agree Arabic & More : I think deep-rooted is a plausible explanation for this. As you mentioned, "deep" on its own is not correct.

agree Tony M : Only explanation I can think of; I suppose one ight assume 'tall' = above ground and 'deep' = below ground, but it still sounds a slightly odd way to express it. / Very true, indeed!

A bit vague I know, but somewhere in my murky past I discovered not all tall trees have deep roots. :(
