My relationship with my mother has been a frustrating one. Growing up, I was all about feelings and their expression. My mother is not a person who "does" feelings well When I was a teenager, I remember telling her, “I know I'm loved, but I don't feel loved. " I wasn't completely ignored, but neither was I encouraged. There was often an element of correction and citicism in our interactions. At the same time, I felt many contradictions. I witnessed my mother being there for me on a daily basis with clean clothes, full-course family meals every night, and her full-time presence. However, we did not talk or otherwise connect on an emotional level, and is was painful.
