Hello fellow translators!
I am currently translating an academic document in which there are these terms:
- seconde C
- seconde D
- seconde A
- seconde B
Any idea about the American equivalent?
Thank you!

10th Grade Scientific Stream
In the French Education system, before the major secondary school reforms of the 1980s, students entering Lycée were streamed from Seconde onwards.
Seconde A, led to the literary and languages stream of the Bac A. Seconde A
could be subdivided into A1, A2, etc. Students could choose to specialize in Classics, languages+math, 3 foreign languages...
Seconde C, was maths, physics and natural sciences, leading to the prestigious Bac C and the slightly less prestigious Bac D. The best students in Seconde C would go into Premiere C (maths), Première D (natural sciences) or Premiere E (maths and engineering).
Seconde AB was created at some point, leading to Premiere B (economics) or the two technical-commercial bacs, G1 or G2.
NB: There was no such thing as Seconde D or Seconde B. Those sections only existed from Premiere on.
Source: I taught these classes in French secondary schools.

Note from asker:
Thank you so much, Milesi! I also think this is the best way to renfer it into American English as C actually stands for the scientific stream. |

Tenth Grade, class C

"Upper/High School
Lycée
Tenth Grade Seconde (2nde)
Eleventh Grade Première (1ère)
Twelfth Grade Terminale (Tle)"
The "C" bit is just a kind of numbering system, like they could have said Seconde 1, 2, 3, 4.
Year 11 in the UK apparently, see here:
https://www.aseica.org/index.php/en/practical-info/equivalen...
VERY tricky to translate for Ireland: Transition Year in theory, but probably best done with a translator's note: 1st year of the final 3-year cycle in the French system (and also in some Francophone countries).

Note added at 6 hrs (2023-07-25 12:31:42 GMT)

French high/secondary school system, that should read.

Note added at 7 days (2023-08-01 09:00:49 GMT) Post-grading

Note to Asker: I think Mollie could be right, but it depends when the Bac dates from. As Mollie says, before the reforms in the 80s.

Note from asker:
Thank you, Conor! But I think C is not actully for numbering. In the French educational system, especially in general high schools, A stands for the Literary stream, C stands for the scientific stream, and D for Biology-Geology. |
