My mother used to say that removing the flower caused the fruit (and the tree) to grow bigger. I know that you are talking grapes, but it sounds that they are NOT removing the flowers, so the grapes remain small. Just my thought.

I actually came up with distinct blossom distribution, as I think the grapes come from the blossoms, but your suggestions sounds good too
