German term

die Spannung auf ein größeres Volumen verteilt

German to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Dental Ceramics
"Durch diese plastische Umformung an der Rissspitze wird der Radius des Risses bei Metallen vergrößert und die Spannung auf ein größeres Volumen verteilt."

From a text about dental ceramics. Here they're talking about the different ways ceramics and metals behave. Does "die Spannung auf ein größeres Volumen verteilt" mean something like "spreads a greater volume of stress"? I'm a bit confused by the "verteilen auf" construction. Spread stress to a greater volume doesn't make any sense (but the use of the accusative case makes the meaning look that way). TIA for your help.

Selected

stress distributed over a greater volume

I understand it to mean that more damage is done in the case of metals because a larger area/volume is affected by the stress. However, it could also mean the oppposite, i.e. that less damage is done because the stress becomes weaker as it 'spreads'

IMO, my proposed translation is equally ambiguous.
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : I'd tend to interpret this as "less damage done because stress becomes weaker" but your solution is appropriately vague anyway.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Cilian. This kind of phrase does seem to be used in the context I'm working with, and as you and Steffen say, it's vague enough to cover both potential interpretations suggested by the German phrase. Thanks once again - appreciate your kind assistance."

see expl.

They mean here that a pressure is distributed in a larger volume,so the pressure on a single point is lower.
I think you can now put the sentence together.
