FTP The text does not mention the function of the FTP packet. The only other mention in the eight pages of the translation is here (but I don't think it makes it any clearer): "Abbildung 3 verdeutlicht das Prinzip der Rohdatenerfassung durch die Sonden. Sie gliedert sich in drei Teile. Links befindet sich schematisch das Internet. Es sind Pakete von drei unterschiedlichen Anwendungssitzungen dargestellt. Zusammengehörige HTTP Pakete, eine FTP Sitzung und eine SMTP Sitzung. In der Mitte der Abb. 3 befindet sich die Sonde.".

More context Das Internet-Analyse-System besteht aus Sonden, die den Netzwerkverkehr an Kommunikationsleitungen unterschiedlicher Netze passiv abgreifen und Kommunikationsparameter auf verschiedenen Kommunikationsebenen zählen. In einem Auswertungssystem werden die Kommunikationsparameter unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten ausgewertet und übersichtlich angezeigt.

I think they are just referring to access here -- every time someone accesses the FTP packet, the counter increases by one. This seems similar to a standard website counter where each hit/site access is counted.

I would still stay with access. You don't really tap into an FTP packet (and there are 0 google hits for that exact phrase). But access is very similar to tapping here in that it's equally passive (or that's how I interpret it anyway).

I believe this instance requires a different translation; I'd use measure.
abgreifen is like abtasten; i.e. a type of collecting info

There's really not enough context; what's the function of the FTP-Paket?

Thx, add'l info helps - Pakete contain the data of each time the app is applied - then the data gets processed. So IMO there are two translations: first, the actual 'measuring', then the 'processing' (in this case) of the results
