German term

aufgehend

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering buildings
"Die archäologischen Befunde aus Ausgrabungen liefern zunächst Hinweise auf die Ausgestaltung des aufgehenden Mauerwerks. So besitzen Türme fast ausschließlich ein quadratisches Fundament, nur gelegentlich finden sich sechseckige Grundrisse."

"In wenigen Einzelfällen bildet aufgehende Originalsubstanz integrale Bestandteile von Museen und Freilichtanlagen."

I have a feeling I would know the English word if only I could think of it - can anyone prompt me please?

\"Ascending\" might work??
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : vertical or rising might work but one could just use masonry/historic fabric, as Maya suggested

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone! I used "ascending" - this might be the word I was looking for. "Rising" would probably be an alternative. I note the point that it could be omitted, but I don´t think that works in my context because it´s actually rather rare, there´s mostly nothing more than foundations. In both the passages quoted, it is essential to make the clear that they refer to stuff on top of the foundations."

the waals (nothing else)

"aufgehend" in this context simply means "rising". Walls are rising, old or new. The word is used often in archeology but it seems superfluous to me. If you search German archeological sites with a decent translation of the explaining text, you will see that the translators mostly skip the word.

In 1961, a group of local citizens formed the Beale Memorial Clock Tower Restoration Committee. This committee decided to build a replica of the original clock tower at the Kern County Museum. As construction progressed the original metal grillwork, Seth Thomas clock and gong were incorporated into the rising masonry. The clock tower was completed and dedicated for the second time on December 13, 1964. In 2001 the clock tower received some much needed restoration from museum staff and volunteers. Damaged clock faces were replaced. The clock works were restored to run off of a pendulum. Metal grillwork received a new coat of paint. Once again this historic time piece sounds the passing hours uniting the community\'s present to its roots in a vanished but vigorous past.

agree Steffen Walter : "walls/masonry/brickwork" for "aufgehendes Mauerwerk", "historic/original fabric" for "aufgehende Originalsubstanz"

wall constuction in progress

or brickwork in progress

aufgehend here is meant more in the sense of 'gestatory', I would think rather than 'rising'. It's basically 'a work in progress'

Actually, \'masonry\' is best for \'Mauerwerk\'
