German term

5-fach punkten

German to English Marketing Idioms / Maxims / Sayings laboratory website/catalogue
Context:
"Jetzt registrieren und 5-fach punkten!
Ihre Empfehlung ist uns attraktive Prämien wert. Sie kennen XXX als Einrichter innovativer und sicherer Laborsysteme?...Dann empfehlen Sie uns für ein neues Laborprojekt und sammeln Sie so Bonuspunkte..."

My attempt:
"Register now and win five times the points".. I really don't understand because punkten means 'to win'... and 5-fach '5-fold' or '5 times'... so it literally means 'win 5 times'... but in English we would need an object... five times what?

Thanks in advance :-)

Discussion

Julia Graham (X) (asker) Jan 7, 2013:
It is a website I am translating and there are paragraphs on different topics. It can therefore jump from one subject to another
philgoddard Jan 2, 2013:
I agree with everyone else who says that this is not enough context. If you don't have any, you should ask the client what it means. I take it as meaning five times as many points - but as many as what? You have to have something to compare it with. And have you really only been given one paragraph to translate? Isn't there anything after this?
CMFTrier Jan 2, 2013:
only 5 points? I think it means that (e.g. on your first purchase) you'd get five times as many points as at any other time.
I agree that 'win' doesn't sound right with this kind of bonus scheme.
Maybe you can say something more general and use alliteration instead of the word play Cetacea mentioned, e.g. 'boost your bonus points balance'.

Ramey Rieger (X) Jan 2, 2013:
CONTEXT is vital Either there is a further list of "benefits" in the context or one can collect 5 points. It all depends on the following text.
Julia Graham (X) (asker) Jan 2, 2013:
Thanks Cetacea, that's really helpful. I'll give that a go :-)
BrigitteHilgner: I'm sorry you find the context insufficient but this is all I have!! There is no more than that.
Cetacea Jan 2, 2013:
Actually... "punkten" doesn't mean "to win", it means "to score", also in a figurative sense. Here, it's obviously a play on words between "Bonuspunkte" and "punkten". In other words, you'll have to rewrite the whole thing for an English audience, especially since you don't "win" bonus points, you just get them.
BrigitteHilgner Jan 2, 2013:
??? Context is meagre Five different ways / five different opportunities to win points

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Natalie and everyone who contributed. Trudy, I think you are right - shame I can't award you points because it is just in the comment section! In the end I decided on "Register now for five times as many points" but I think I'll go back and change it to Trudy's option. "Register now and earn five times the usual points" Thanks again :)"

win fivefold points

From the context I think you are right to assume it simply means one is awarded five times as many points as normal; to be idiomatic you have to supply the object yourself.

win by 5 times..

I think to register is the object over here..
Hence I thought of win 'by' times

win 5 extra points

according to the context given, there is only a chance of collecting 5 points when registering
Peer comment(s):

neutral CMFTrier : Is it really just 5 points? Or 5x the points you would normally get?

This is an alternative to the phrases with 'five ...', in case you want something different. See my explanation in the discussion.

5-fold benefits

"Register now for 5-fold benefits!"

or:

"Register now and get 5-fold benefits!"

If this is about actual bonus points, I'd simply say:

"Register now for 5 ways to earn bonus points!"

Register NOW and gain 5 times the benefits.

I think benefits would be safe and would also include points as we assume them to be.
