German term

abgefahren

German to English Tech/Engineering Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.)

worn out/worn down

I can understand that you want to avoid repetition of used, and that something like wearing them down (I presume they have some kind of tread) is suitable.

agree BrigitteHilgner : Agree although I find that in general, English speakers are less worried about "using" one and the same term several times than German speakers. A British editor told me that one should only use different terms if one wanted to express something different

driven (on) normally until they are no longer serviceable

Or: driven (on) as long as they are still serviceable

That avoids using "use" twice and also gets away from the idea of "worn down", because you should change the tyres *before* they are worn down!
