German term

Röntgen-Bauchübersicht

Discussion

heidi (X) May 30, 2015:
The THX goes to uyuni, (and not me), for it was uyuni who opened his/her explanation with the sentence: "Plain X-ray of the abdomen, not a contrast study..."
Nora Morrison (asker) May 30, 2015:
Thanks, uyuni - I guess I was a bit slow on the uptake; at least my gut feeling about some specific meaning of *Bauchübersicht* was correct :)
uyuni May 30, 2015:
Nora, you got it (THX to heidi).
And it's not necessarily done with the patient lying flat (supine position).
Quite the contrary today's standard technique is the left lateral decubitus position.
Nora Morrison (asker) May 30, 2015:
Thanks, Heidi, for pointing this out! So now, I understand that an *abdominal x-ray* could be either a plain X-ray or a contrast study, while a *Bauchübersicht* is NEVER a contrast study but ALWAYS done with the patient lying flat? My original choice was based on the fact that I don't know whether it was done with the patient was lying flat.
heidi (X) May 30, 2015:
Calling it an 'abdominal x-ray' would be missing out on the fact that it is a plain X-ray of the abdomen, and not a contrast study.
Nora Morrison (asker) May 30, 2015:
Thanks, everyone - have a great weekend! I tend to go with Ruth but I will wait until 24 hors have passed, before I select the most helpful answer.
uyuni May 29, 2015:
zebung, please be assured that "Abdomenübersicht" is an X-ray technique only...
zebung May 29, 2015:
Gotcha. I still think think knowing what type of machine would be helpful. Scan, ultrasound... You are correct, just trying to narrow down the possible options... If it is not known, maybe "imaging" could be used. Hard to say without more info. Even the type of patient is important - ER/triage (e.g. acute pancreatitis) a follow-up after admission...
uyuni May 29, 2015:
Hi zebung, correct, strictly speaking, but still colloquial parlance, though, among medics and please see my note posted a minute earlier...;-)
zebung May 29, 2015:
depends on what machine was used
zebung May 29, 2015:
abdominal

abdominal plain film/plain abdominal film

Plain X-ray of the abdomen, not a contrast study...

For this reason you should call it an *abdominal plain film* or abdomen film rather than a “flat plate,” an obsolete term that derives from a time when images where made on large glass plates instead of x-ray film.

thank you kmaincor!
neutral philgoddard : I don't see how you get from "Übersicht" to "flat plate". Why do you think Ruth's answer is wrong? Just a friendly question :-)
