German term

Spannungs- und Linienwillen

German to English Art/Literary Music Piano technique
I'm translating the biography of a piano-teacher friend of mine who sums up the aim of her teaching as follows:

... und der / dem Studierenden zu helfen, Klangsinn, sowie Spannungs- und Linienwillen entwickeln zu können.

I know exactly what she means, but for years I've been stuck on the English equivalent of the German word "Spannung" in the positive context of instrumental or vocal technique. TIA for all your suggestions!

intensity and line

vocally at least, if someone asked for more 'Spannung' I'd increase the intensity, ie don't sag in the middle, keep the musical focus, don't let up until you get to the end of the phrase
