@Lorna your conclusion seems logical but you should be able to derive it from the rest of the contract. If there is a clause for the initial contract period that the artist has to buy X CDs if they are not sold to third parties, then this would mean this obligation is void if the company exercises the option for contract extension.

I think it refers to the fact that the artist is not obliged to renew the contract when given the option.

I think it refers to the artist buying some of the cds himself.
