Source wrong! Sorry, whoever typed the narrator's text got it slightly wrong. Listening carefully, it is NOT the "Hohenheimer Futterverwerttest" but the "Hohenheimer Futterwerttest"! Listen at http://dfg-science-tv.de/projekte/die-supersaurier.html episode 06. At 2:37 the narrator says Futterverwerttest, but at 2:46 the researcher says "Hohenheimer Futterwerttest"!

"Food consumption" wäre auf Deutsch "Futteraufnahme". Unter Futterwertung versteht man den Quotienten aus Futterverbrauch und Körpergewichtszuwachs.

Die Menge Energie, die aus dem Futter zu holen wäre, ist eben genau das, was man unter Futterverwertung versteht: Je besser der Quotient aus Futterverbrauch und Gewichtszuwachs, desto mehr Energie liefert das Futter.

Für "Hohenheimer Futter*wert*test" ist in der englischen Fachliteratur tatsächlich der Begriff "Hohenheim gas test" gebräuchlich. Da es also um den Energiegehalt von Futter geht und sich dieser Text an Laien richtet, könnte man es jedoch (je nach Zusammenhang) vielleicht so ausdrücken: "evaluate the energy content of food using the Hohenheim gas test." Aus "gas test" allein ist ja -- im Gegensatz zu Futterwerttest -- nicht sofort ersichtlich. worum es geht.

Ja, sicher, aber es wurde ursprünglich nach "Futter*ver*werttest" gefragt, und darauf bezog sich auch meine erste Antwort. Auf den "Hohenheimer Futterwerttest" bin ich allerdings obenstehend inzwischen ebenfalls eingegangen.

Sicher, dass es den Quotienten aus Futterverbrauch und Körpergewichtszuwachs ist? In der darstellung ist nichts von Körpergewichtszuwachs oder Körpergewichtszuwachsmessung zu erkennen, lediglich eine Messung der Menge an Energie, die aus dem Futter zu holen wäre.
Zu "Note added at 20 hrs (2008-09-10 12:05:48 GMT)": Stimmt schon, aber hier wird ja nicht etwa die Quotient aus Futterverbrauch und Gewichtszuwachs gemessen, sondern nur die Gasmenge die von den Bakterien durch Gärung (künstliche Verdauung) freigesetzt wird.

This experiment appears to be primarily about how much energy could be extracted from different plants/feed by digestion, not about the efficiency. Different plants are all subjected to the same process to compare their nutritional value.

If it is food acquired by animals grazing then it's "fodder", if it is food supplied by man and processed in some way then it's "feed".
