German term

Bibliothek

German to English Social Sciences Philosophy University of Zurich course
I suspect that in this context this might mean his knowledge base, his field of research or the background information that was available to him. If the course covers "the author as reader". then this probably does not refer to his own collective works, as I initially thought.

Der Autor als Leser. F. Dürrenmatts «Stoffe» im Kontext seiner *Bibiliothek* (schriftliche Arbeit, QO)

(personal) library

I also thought it referred to his own publications, but if not it might refer to his personal library. Which books did he read and how did they affect his authorship?
Note from asker:
Yes -I think it refers to the background he collected or created to form his opinions of. This answer in a Leo forum alerted me to the fact that there might be a different way to look at it: http://dict.leo.org/forum/viewUnsolvedquery.php?idThread=521433&idForum=1&lp=ende&lang=de There is also the term "bibliotheca" which refers to a kind of summary of books, or a collection of books. Perhaps then: ".. in the context of his own reading"?
Jim Tucker - I know that Leo ref was on Microsoft, but that is what first made me think of the "Bibliothek" as a possible wider reading reference and knowledge background than Duerenmatt's own (owned) books. I did not know it as a field of study - my own experience with literature is undergraduate. But thanks for pointing it out, and thanks for all the help and comments.

Thanks Constantinos :)
agree Jim Tucker (X) : Yes - asker should look more closely at that leo link - it's not applicable here (refers to Microsoft Knowledge Base). Examining an author's personal library is a widespread subgenre of scholarship.

agree Horst Huber (X) : Of course; it's easy to forget that only a few years ago people's, even authors', knowledge came from the printed book.

More details on this F. Dürrenmatt course

You may read this sentence:

"Die Leseeintragungen F. Dürrenmatts in die Bücher seiner realen Bibliothek sind kürzlich in einem Online-Katalog des Schweizerischen Literatur-Archivs zugänglich gemacht worden."

here:

So this speaks - IMO - for the interpretation in Anna's answer --> his own real, personal library (his own reading).
