: While horse fly is certainly correct, it should always be two words, because it is a fly (order diptera), unlike insects such as butterflies or dragonflies. Normally Webster is the English authority, but he wasn't an entomologist.

Fine by me if entomologists spell it with two words, and if Kalimeh's paper is for an academic audience, she should consider that. My editors generally want me to stick to M-W usage, though.

: "dark giant horsefly" seems to be the full name, but "the" horse-fly (or horse fly) may be enough

Thanks. I'm not sure. I only see one google for "dark giant horsefly" so I suspect it's actually a subspecies (I'm no expert here).
