Aber aber, Nicole ... ... der Thilo ist doch ein berühmter Genetiker -- zugegebenermaßen mit preußischem Schnauzbart ;;- ]] Sicher hat er es nicht so gemeint ;-]
Nicole Schnell Dec 10, 2012:
Tonality The term "Kopftuchmädchen" is incredibly insulting. Kim's suggestion "headscarf girls" is perfect. Please don't try to make it sound nice. "Hijab girl" might work as well.
Apurva Barve (asker) Dec 10, 2012:
Could you please tell me how to translate the highlighted phrase?

"Integration requires effort from those that are to be integrated. I will not show respect for anyone that is not making that effort. I do not have to acknowledge anyone who lives by welfare, denies the legitimacy of the very state that provides that welfare, refuses to care for the education of his children and constantly produces new little headscarf-girls. This holds true for 70 percent of the Turkish and 90 percent of the Arab population in Berlin."

agree mill2 : girls in headscarves sounds nicer // I meant nice in a linguistic sense, not in a respectful sense. I don't think any of his contempt is lost in this formulation.

True, but I don't think we should be going for 'nice' here.

agree Michael Martin, MA : With mill2//You could make a case to that effect. Less elegant but on balance you may be right about that..Both options would work just fine, though, I think.

Wouldn't you want to reflect the tone of the original?

agree jccantrell : And I thought the tone here in the USA was rough. And this in a country where you can sue for somebody giving you the finger? Wow.
