Italian term

"distinguere..i mattoni..dagli altri laterizi

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Construction
The exression comes from a description of skills, or lack of them, among brick layers and construction workers.
The key here must be to know exactly what the difference is between mattoni and laterizi-many dictionaries just give bricks. I think that laterizi are the hollow bricks much used in Italy, am I right?

It must mean something like can't distinguish the main building bricks from the hollow bricks? Thanks for all help.

Yorick Jenkins

Here is the whole sentence

Discussion

I think Kudoz is great, you can learn a lot too! I lay bricks and tiles and mix cement all the time!

choose the right brick between different types of brick

This means that he does not have the skills to choose the right type of brick, amongst all the different possibilities, for the specific job he has been asked to perform,(as homework).
Peer comment(s):

agree gfe : Quite so. Probably "laterizi" was used to avoid repeating "mattoni"

"distinguish/differentiate.....bricks....from clay bricks

Laterizio=clay brick.

Give a look at the link.

to distinguish ...bricks from other types of brickwork

laterizi - derives from latin
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laterizi
it is just a collective name for all types of brickwork, such as roof tiles, bricks, etc.
garzanti:
the question basically asks the guy if he can distinguish between a plain brick and other types of bricks or brick tiles.

just to underline that even bricks (mattoni) are made of clay:
Il mattone è un materiale da costruzione di tipo laterizio, solitamente a forma di parallelepipedo fatto di argilla cotta o fango essiccato.
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattone
therefore bricks are a type of laterizio..... meaning that laterizi (as already stated) is brickwork in general whereas bricks are just a type of laterizi...
