Organizational path and organizational performance: a preliminary theoretical and methodological overview from an evolutionary perspective

1 INTRODUCTION

The problem this paper addresses is the relationship between organizational paths and organizational performance. The former of these subjects has received increasing attention as an object of study in itself (Sydow, Schreyögg et al. 2009; Schreyögg and Sydow 2011) and the latter, specifically when it comes to the search for the underlying causes of organizational performance, is, quite probably, the most important area of interest of management and organizational scholars (Richard, Devinney et al. 2009). Even so, they have not so far received joint analytical treatment. It is, therefore, our objective to present a preliminary theoretical and methodological overview of how the notions of organizational path and organizational performance operate together at, at least, a high level of abstraction.

There are certain theoretical commonalities between these notions which have drawn our attention and interested us in this endeavor; specifically the idea that both organizational path, organizational performance and their underlying processes can be defined, in their best conceptualizations, as inherently multi-dimensional constructs (Richard, Devinney et al. 2009; Barreto 2010; Schienstock 2011). As some analysts have underscored, this turns their study into one of the most complex and thorny questions to try address. March and Sutton (1997) make this case quite eloquently when it comes to organizational performance. They particularly highlight the difficulties extant when we are dealing with “aggregate assessments” which try to asses “overall organizational effectiveness” (March and Sutton 1997). This is so because inferences about firm performance are drawn from ambiguous “histories” which are “notoriously difficult to interpret”.
