#8: Bullhorn acacia ants
These ants have a very special habitat. They live in harmony with the acacia tree while making their empty branches their home. The ants protect the tree from attackers, other insects and even from us! In return, the ants feed off the tree’s very nourishing nectar. But beware of their innocent appearance, these ants are very aggressive. Once it leaves its hiding place, it produces hormones and doesn’t hesitate to sting whomever dares approach its home. It’s bite is categorized as a “rare, piercing and elevated sort of pain.”
#7: Bald-faced hornets
Bald-faced hornets are the largest of their species and are very aggressive in nature. Luckily for us, they only live in North America. These wasps make their nests in high altitudes, sometimes even 65 feet above ground! It feeds off nectar and also other insects and carcasses. These wasps aren’t the most dangerous out there, but their bite is still very unpleasant. Schmidt describes it as “rich, hearty and slightly crunchy.”
#6: German yellowjackets
These black and yellow wasps have a pretty unique defense mechanism. They emit a chemical odor around their nest to scare off predators. Contrary to bees, their darts don’t remain in their victims’ skin, which allows them to sting multiple times. The pain, according to Justin Schmidt, is “hot and smoky, almost irreverent.” But beware… these wasps like sugar from fruits and foods consumed by humans, particularly sweet drinks. So make sure to look around you while you’re having that picnic!

رحيق الشجر المغذّي جداً. إلا أن عليك الاحتراس من مظهرها البريء فهذا النمل عدائيّ جداً. حيث إنه حالما يغادر مخبئه، يفرز هرمونات ولا يتردد في لدغ كل من يتجرّأ على الاقتراب من منزله. تصنّف لدغته على أنها "نادرة وثاقبة ودرجة ألمها مرتفعة نوعاً ما."

الزنبور الأصلع الوجه هو الأكبر من بين أبناء جنسه، وهي عدائية جداً بطبيعتها. ولحسن حظنا، نقطن في أمريكا الشمالية. تبني هذه الدبابير أعشاشها على ارتفاعات عالية، حيث يصل ارتفاعها أحياناً إلى عشرين متر عن الأرض! وهي تتغذى على الرحيق وأيضا ًعلى الحشرات الأخرى والجثث. ليست هذه الدبابير الأخطر في البرية، لكن لدغتها أليمة حقاً. يصفها شميت على أنها "دسمة ودافئة ومقرمشة قليلاً."
#6: دبور السترة الصفراء الألماني
تمتلك هذه الدبابير السوداء والصفراء آلية دفاع فريدة جداً من نوعها. فهي تصدر رائحة كيميائية حول أعشاشها لتخيف المفترسات وتطردها. وعلى عكس النحل، لا تبقى إبرها في جلد ضحيتها، مما يسمح لها بأن تلدغ مرّات متعددة. الألم، حسب جستن بأنه "حار ودخاني وغير موقّرة." لكن عليك الحذر... فهذه الدبابير تحبّ السكر الذي مصدره الفواكه والأطعمة المستهلكة من قبل البشر، وخاصة المشروبات الحلوة. لذا احرص على الاحتراس أثناء استمتاعك بتلك النزهة!
