Στην εισαγωγή του βιβλίου Long Slow Burn, η Kathy Weston συστήνει στους επιδόξους ερευνητές του LGBT movement και των queer studies να μην μελετούν τη σεξουαλικότητα ξέχωρα από ιστορικούς, ταξικούς και φυλετικούς παράγοντες. Επιπρόσθετα, προτείνει τη χρησιμοποίηση της σεξουαλικότητας ως μέθοδο, ώστε να διερευνηθούν άλλα πεδία της κοινωνιολογίας και της ανθρωπολογίας, όπως η εργασία, η οικογένεια, η κοινωνική οργάνωση, η εξέλιξη των ειδών, η θρησκεία, κλπ. Αλλά, μέχρι στιγμής, γράφει η Weston, οι κοινωνιολόγοι και οι ανθρωπολόγοι, στα διάφορα ταξίδια τους, όπου μελετούσαν πρωτόγονες κοινωνίες, κουβαλούσαν μαζί με τις αποσκευές τους και τις δικές τους, ‘αποικιοκρατικές’ πεποιθήσεις για την σεξουαλικότητα και την κανονικότητα. Γι αυτό, η Weston, θεώρει αυτές τις έρευνες ανεπιτυχείς, δεδομένου ότι ‘τα αποτελέσματα δεν έβγαζαν κανένα νόημα για τους ντόπιους’.
Έχουν τα πράγματα αλλάξει σήμερα; Δεδομένου ότι η σεξουαλικότητα έχει προβληθεί, ενοχοποιηθεί και απομυθοποιηθεί από τα μέσα, έχει βρει το δρόμο της στις πανεπιστημιακές αίθουσες όχι ως συμπλήρωμα, αλλά ως αυτόνομο πεδίο, μπορούμε να πούμε ότι τα συμπεράσματα των δικών μας ερευνών θα είναι ορθότερα από αυτά των προκατειλημμένων αποικιοκρατών; Το πιο πιθανό είναι, στην προσπάθεια μας να απαλλαγούμε από τις πεποιθήσεις που φέρουμε μέσα μας και τις κοινωνικές προκαταλήψεις, να οδηγηθούμε σε νέους αφορισμούς. Πόσο δύσκολο άραγε είναι να θεοποιήσουμε τους ομοφυλόφιλους, τους τραβεστί και τους ψυχικά διαταραγμένους, επειδή στα μάτια ενός νέου ερευνητή, ο αποκλεισμός τους συνιστά κάποια μορφή εναντίωσης προς το κοινωνικό κατεστημένο, κάποια μορφή επανάστασης; Αντίθετα, πόσο εύκολο είναι να μελετήσουμε το κόσμο από τη δική τους οπτική γωνία, χωρίς να έχουμε τις ίδιες εμπειρίες;
Και μόνο ο διαχωρισμός σε ‘εμείς’ και ‘αυτοί’ εγείρει προβληματισμούς. Οπότε, αυτή η εργασία θα ακολουθήσει τις συμβουλές της Weston, επιδιώκοντας να παρουσιάσει την χρήση της σεξουαλικότητας, η καλύτερα της (μη) κανονικότητας, από τρεις φωτογράφους, που το έργο τους προκάλεσε και προκαλεί συζητήσεις, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη το κοινωνικοιστορικό πλαίσιο στο οποίο παράχθηκε. Μολαταύτα, δεν πρόκειται να προχωρήσω παραπέρα και να υποστηρίξω ότι αυτή η εργασία θα είναι περισσότερο ‘αντικειμενική’ από τις μελέτες των αποικιοκρατών ανθρωπολόγων.

‘Αυτό που βλέπω βρίσκεται πάντα έξω από μένα’

‘H φωτογραφία, γεννήθηκε από μια τεχνική ανακάλυψη. Δεν υπήρξε κάποια ανάγκη πίσω απ’ το ξεκίνημα της’, γράφει ο θεωρητικός Πλατών Ριβέλλης, στο βιβλίο Μονόλογος για τη Φωτογραφία. Ο Ριβέλλης διαχωρίζει τη ζωγραφική από τη φωτογραφία(όπως και τόσοι άλλοι) εντοπίζοντας την εξής διάφορα· η ζωγραφική, όπως και η μουσική ή η γραφή, ανταποκρίνονταν εκ των προτέρων σε ανάγκες του ανθρώπου πνεύματος, που τον ώθησαν στην εφεύρεση των μουσικών οργάνων, του χαρτιού, κλπ. Η φωτογραφία, ο κινηματογράφος και η τηλεόραση πρώτα εφευρεθήκαν, και μετά δημιούργησαν (ή απάντησαν σε) ανθρώπινες ανάγκες. Άλλωστε, ο σκοπός των νέων τεχνών, αρχικά, δεν ήταν καλλιτεχνικός.
Όπως προείπα, ο διαχωρισμός ζωγραφικής–φωτογραφίας είναι προσφιλής όχι μόνο στους φιλοσόφους των δυο τεχνών, αλλά και στους θεωρητικούς των μέσων γενικότερα. Όταν ο Vilem Flusser παρουσιάζει τα σταδία της πορείας της ανθρωπότητας, διακρίνουμε το στάδιο των παραδοσιακών εικόνων (σπηλαιογραφία, ζωγραφική) που ανταποκρίνονται στην περίοδο όπου οι άνθρωποι ήταν παραδομένοι στις φαντασιακές θεωρήσεις του κόσμου, και στο στάδιο των τεχνικών εικόνων, που αναδυθήκαν μετά την κατάρρευση των κειμένων. Ο Flusser δείχνει την προτίμηση του στο σύμπαν των τεχνικών εικόνων, καθώς βασίζονται όχι στη φαντασία, όπως οι παραδοσιακές, αλλά στην έννοια της εικονοσύνθεσης, έκφρασης του συνειδητού και όχι του ασυνειδήτου.
Αυτά το 1985, όταν πρωτοεκδόθηκε το Προς το σύμπαν των τεχνικών εικόνων. Γιατί τον 19ο αιώνα, τον αιώνα εμφάνισης της φωτογραφίας, ο Κήρυξ της Λειψίας, όπως μας πληροφορεί ο Walter Benjamin, έγραφε: ‘Το να θέλει κάνεις να καθηλώσει φευγαλέα είδωλα….είναι βλασφημία προς το Θεό. Ο άνθρωπος πλάστηκε κατ’ εικόνα και ομοίωση του Θεού, και η εικόνα του Θεού δεν μπορεί να καθηλωθεί με καμιά ανθρώπινη μηχανή. Το πολύ ο θειος καλλιτέχνης έχει το δικαίωμα, κινούμενος από ουράνια έμπνευση, να τολμήσει να αποδώσει τα θεανθρώπινα χαρακτηριστικά, σε στιγμή ύψιστης έξαρσης, υπακούοντας στην ανώτερη επιταγή της μεγαλοφυΐας του, χωρίς καμιά βοήθεια από μηχανές’. Εννοείται ότι ‘θειος καλλιτέχνης’ δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι ποτέ ο φωτογράφος, παρά μόνο ο ζωγράφος, του οποίου το έργο εξαρτάται από τη θεία Πρόνοια και όχι από τις διαβολικές μηχανές.
Οι φόβοι των θρησκόληπτων και οι φόβοι του Μπωντλαίρ (‘τούτες τις βλαβερές μέρες ξεπρόβαλε μια καινούργια βιομηχανία που δεν είναι μικρή η συμβολή της στο να ενισχύσει τη χυδαία ηλιθιότητα στην πιστή της…, πως η τέχνη δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο και δεν μπορεί να είναι τίποτα άλλο από την ακριβή απόδοση της φύσης….Ένας εκδικητικός θεός εισάκουσε τη φωνή τούτου του πλήθους. Ο Ντάγκερ έγινε ο Μεσσίας του’), δεν κατάφεραν να σταματήσουν την έλευση της νέα τέχνης. Το πραγματικό που τρόμαζε τον ποιητή αναδύθηκε από τις χρονοφωτογραφικές μηχανές του Μαιμπριτς για να μάθουν οι ζωγράφοι επιτέλους την σωστή αναπαράσταση της κίνησης των ζωών. Οι θρησκευτικές ιστορίες ενέπνευσαν τους φωτογράφους. Και εντάθηκαν οι συζητήσεις με θέμα τη φωτογραφία σαν τέχνη, αν και ο Benjamin και ο Ριβελλης, ανοίγουν έναν ουσιαστικότερο διάλογο για την ιδία την τέχνη της φωτογραφίας.
Η φωτογραφία δίνει νέα ώθηση στη ζωγραφική να ξεφύγει από τον νατουραλισμό, εφόσον πλέον υπήρχε το μέσο για την πιστή αναπαράσταση του κόσμου, και να πειραματιστεί σε καινούργια πλαίσια. Νέα κινήματα, που αδιαφορούν για το πραγματικό αναδύονται. Τι συμβαίνει όμως όταν η φωτογραφία, η κατ εξοχήν τέχνη του πραγματικού, επιχειρεί να ξεφύγει από το να είναι απλά καταγραφή της (μιας) πραγματικότητας; Τι συμβαίνει όταν φεύγει από το δρόμο, από τα βικτωριανά οικογενειακά πορτραίτα με τα ζωγραφισμένα φόντο, και αναπαριστά νεκρούς, γυμνά σώματα, πιο καθαρά από όσο έχουν παρουσιαστεί ποτέ, και αργότερα ανθρώπους του περιθωρίου, όταν μπαίνει σε πορνεία, τσίρκο και φρενοκομεία;
Translation - English In the introduction of her book Long Slow Burn, Kathy Weston is asking the potential researchers of the LGTB movement and queer studies not to study sexuality without considering the historical, racial and class factors. Furthermore, she suggests the use of sexuality as a method in order to research other fields of sociology and anthropology such as employment, family, social organization, religion, the evolution of species, e.t.c. So far, according to Kathy Weston, sociologists and anthropologists in their many travels, where they were studying primitive societies, along with their luggage, were also carrying their own ‘colonial’ beliefs about sexuality and normality. Thus, Kathy Weston regards these researches as unsuccessful, considering that the results made absolutely no sense for the locals11.
Have things changed since? Given that sexuality has been advertised and demystified by the media, has found its way to the academic classes not only as a supplement, but also as an autonomous field of study, can we support the notion that the results of our researches would be sounder than those of the prejudiced colonials? It seems more likely that, our attempt to discard the beliefs and the social prejudices we all carry, can easily lead us to new aphorisms. Is it so hard to deify the homosexuals, transvestites and mentally disturbed just because, in the eyes of a young researcher, the social exclusion they sometimes implement on themselves may be considered as a form of opposition to social establishments, a form of rebellion we might say? On the other hand, is it so easy to claim that we study their world from their own point of view, when we might not share the same experiences?
The distinction between ‘they’ and ‘we’, which is being made unconsciously, raises many concerns. Thus, this paper, written partly based on Weston’s advices, seeks to present the use of sexuality, or (ab)normality, in the work of three photographers, and explore at the same time the social and historical context in which it was produced. Nevertheless, i will not support that this paper is more objective than the results that were produced by the colonial anthropologists.

‘What i see is always out of me’

The theorist Plato Rivellis in the book Monologue about Photography writes that ‘photography was born of a discovery technique. There was no need behind this inception.’. Rivellis (and many others) separates painting from photography identifying the following difference; painting, music or writing, addressed to primary needs of the human spirit, which led to the invention of musical organs, paper, e.t.c2. Photography, cinematography and television were first invented and then produced (or responded to) human needs. Moreover, in the beginning, the purpose behind these new art forms was not spiritual or artistic.
The distinction between painting and photography is endearing not only to philosophers of the two arts, but also to media theorists. When Vilem Flusser describes the stages in the course of humanity, we detect the stage of traditional images (cave drawings, painting) that reflects a time when humans were surrendered to an imaginary view of the world, and the stage of technical images, that emerged from the collapse of written documents. Flusser shows his preference for the universe of technical images, which are based not on imagination, like the traditional ones, but in the concept of eikonosynthesis, an ability to compose different pictures together, which, for Flusser, is an expression of the conscious rather than of the unconscious3.
Into the Universe of Technical Images was published in 1985. In the nineteenth century though, the century that photography was invented, opinions regarding the new medium were much different. Walter Benjamin4 informs us that a newspaper in Leibnitz was reporting: ‘To fix fleeting reflections.... is a blasphemy to God. Man is created in the image and likeness of God, and the image of God cannot be held fast by any human machine. At most the prior artist -enraptured by heavenly inspiration may at the highest command of his genius dare to reproduce the divine features, in an instant of highest dedication, without any help from machines.’. It is safe to assume that a photographer could never be a ‘divine artist’, because his work depends on diabolical machines, and not on Divine Providence, like the painter’s.
The fears of religionists were also Baudelaire fears Benjamin notes; ‘in these lamentable days a new industry emerged, which has helped not a little in strengthening vulgar stupidity in its belief....., that art is nothing more than and cannot be anything else than the exact reproduction of nature. An vengeful god heard the voice of that crowd. Daguerre became their Messiah.’, but those voices could not stop the advent of the new art form. The Real that scared the poet emerged from the photographs of Maybridge, which could be used now to teach the painters how to represent correctly the motion of livestock5. Religious archetypes inspired the photographers. And the discussions on whether photography is art or not intensified,

although Rivellis and Benjamin are part of a much more meaningful dialogue about the art of photography itself.
Photography pushed painting to free from naturalism, because it already was a medium for the accurate representation of the world, forcing painters to experiment. That led to the emerging of new art movements, which defy reality. But what happens when photography, the very art of reality, attempts to escape its own restrictions? What happens when the medium shifts from being a form of documenting (a) reality, and starts depicting dead or naked bodies more clear than ever, and later on enters brothels, circuses and mental institutions?
