English to Turkish: Conlangs: Their Purposes and Design - Yapay Diller: Amaçları ve Tasarımı
General field: Social Sciences
Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English
Conlangs are languages that have been created by people for specific purposes, rather than arising naturally as a part of human communication. Some people create them for movies, tv shows or literature, others as a purely artistic endeavor, while yet other conlangs, especially the oldest ones such as Esperanto, came into being as a tool to facilitate human communication. Esperanto itself was designed to be easy to learn, at least for people who already spoke one of the major Western European languages, with the idea that it would help facilitate world peace by enabling people of different countries to speak to each other more easily, since learning a natural language can be quite difficult and take many years of hard work to become fluent in. To accomplish this, Zamenhof, the man who invented Esperanto, designed it as a language with no irregularities, unlike most if not all natural languages. For example, the verbal system has no irregular conjugations, and the nouns are never declined in any irregular way, nor do adjectives, prepositions, or any other parts of speech follow an irregular pattern at any point. This is not to say that all conlangs are like this, however; some have purposely been designed to have irregularity, especially as a product of "historical change" (when daughter languages have been created), mimicking natural languages in this respect.
