De allí en adelante, podían reproducirse copias de libros de una forma más rápida y económica, con un grado de perfección hasta entonces nunca alcanzado.
Muy apropiadamente, la primera impresión importante de Gutenberg fue una magnífica edición de la Biblia, para la cual utilizó el texto de la versión de Jerónimo traducida al latín llamada Vulgata, y que fue publicada en Maguncia entre 1450 y 1456.
