Hello, my name is . I am a research study staff member at the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU). I am inviting you to think about being in a research study. This study is looking at people who were recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), and the people that live with them. The doctor in charge of this study is Dr. Neil Martinson.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS RESEARCH?
We want to find out how many people living in the same house or who have close contact with someone who has TB also have the disease themselves.
WHERE WILL THE STUDY BE DONE?
The study will be conducted by the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU), Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto at 56 clinics within Limpopo Province.
HOW LONG IS THIS STUDY AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL PARTICIPATE?
The total number of participants, including those in all file reviews will be 128,171. This is an average of 2,288 participants expected to be enrolled per site (clinic). The total number of close contacts of new TB cases whom we will enroll is 9,450. The study population will vary depending on the component of the study but will include men and women between 0-99 years old.
