Spanish term

cierros

Spanish to English Art/Literary Architecture
Describing a 19th Century building in Malaga:

Three examples of the usage:

Se marca la verticalidad con el añadido de cierros de madera en los ejes segundo y sexto de esta fachada, y por el ligero avance del muro en el eje central.

Las fachadas del edificio han sido rehabilitadas recuperando los huecos, las tipologías de las carpinterías, molduras, ménsulas, cornisas, barandillas de forja y cierros de madera.

Grandes ménsulas, que arrancan desde muy abajo sostienen los cierros corridos de los laterales.

Thanks!

@Marie, thanks for your research. Yes it's all a big vague isn't it!
Marie Wilson Dec 29, 2022:
I'm wondering if in your case they use the term "cierro" to differentiate between normal wooden window shutters and the full-length louvre type hinged doors?
Marie Wilson Dec 29, 2022:
@Anna I've actually been looking more into this today, with no luck, as your pictures definitely seem like contraventanas, whereas in similar pages on buildings in Málaga, both terms are mentioned, though I can't find a clear difference:

I wish I could choose both answers as they would both apply in other contexts but sadly not in this one!
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Dec 28, 2022:
So according to the client this can refer to shutters after all!!
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Dec 27, 2022:
Am checking with the client as I am finding this very confusing. The photos that are ostensibly of the properties being described, according to the client's website, do not seem to line up with any of the possible solutions given!
philgoddard Dec 23, 2022:
Anna I've just seen your Google Maps reference, sorry. Is that the building in your text?

Those are juliet balconies, not enclosed, but they don't seem to be made of wood or located "en los ejes segundo y sexto de esta fachada".
philgoddard Dec 23, 2022:
I think both answers are convincing and well argued. Knowing what the building is would probably help us to decide.
Marie Wilson Dec 23, 2022:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/spanis Enclosed balconies and bay windows are very similar, although enclose seems to convey a sense of cerrar. According to Cambridge:

cierro
noun
[ masculine ] /'θjero/
balcón cubierto y cerrado
enclosed balcony
un cierro con cristales y persianas
an enclosed balcony with windows and blinds

Toni Castano Dec 23, 2022:
@Anna No, a "shutter" is just a component of the window, usually a covering, not the window itself. Just my opinion, okay?
Anna Moorby DipTrans (asker) Dec 23, 2022:
could they also be shutters? Just thinking about when they are talking about cierros de madera specifically and looking at some of the images...https://www.google.com/maps/place/C. Marqués de Larios, 4, 2...

enclosed balconies

Good description here:

Colonisation eventually took balconies around the world. Today, Malta’s iconic closed-box balconies and the similarly enclosed balconies of Andalucia, Spain, are likely influenced by the territories’ former Moorish landlords.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone! The client gave me such a generic answer "Cierros de madera se refiere a cerramientos de balcones, terrazas y otros espacios abiertos." but when I questioned them about the exact building and said the only wooden things were the shutters, they replied that yes in this case they were shutters!!"

Bay window (balcony)

After conducting a research on a term basically known in Andalusia (and unknown in the rest of Spain outside of architectural circles), I think “bay window” is what fits here the best. See references below:

https://balconyguide.com/what-is-an-indoor-balcony-called/

Bay window
A bay window is a large window that projects from the wall of a building, typically forming a recess in the wall.
Bay windows are often used to provide seating and display space in a room, to frame views of the outdoors, and to allow more natural light into the interior.
