Actually, I'm not certain what category I should put this under. I realize that there was another question regarding this term, but I'm not sure the answer provided there would work in this context:
Человеческую природу переделать нельзя, но смирить ее, обуздать неискоренимую нашу алчность можно и необходимо. Занимается этим общество, ***социум,*** совокупность людей, уже своим именем в европейских языках указывающая на социализм.

socium
socium is a Latin term and would be used as such in English

: Yes, here it is used in the same meaning as "society" - with a scientific flavour.

community
Socium - not English term. May be some "egg-heads" use it but Google gives only Russian sites.
May be 'социум - социализм' might be transformed into 'community - communism' in this context. Or 'socialism-communism'?

Note from asker:
Not entirely true--Google also gives Ukrainian, Czech, German, and Romanian sites. Not that that helps much. |

society
Human society - why not this one?
Note from asker:
"Obschestvo" is already used in the same sentence... |
Okay, let's put it this way: if I translate "socium" as "society," how would I deal with "obschestvo?" What would the sentence sound like? |

: Totally agree with Andrew. "Социум" is an invention of russian philosophers and sociologists. I found a very interesting discussion on this issue: http://forum.lingvo.ru/actualthread.aspx?bid=20&tid=18819&hl...
