Source text - German Die Frage nach der jüdischen Identität im sowjetischen und postsowjetischen Kontext verlagert sich deshalb im besonderen Masse auf die historische und sozial-politische Ebene, weil das russisch-jüdische Selbstverständnis in dieser Zeit nicht viel aus den religiösen, rituellen, also traditionellen Quellen des Judentums speisen konnte. Einerseits die allen jüdischen Minderheiten in Europa eigene fortgeschrittene Assimilierung, andererseits das politisch begründete Verbot auf das Jüdische haben die letzteren aus dem Bewusstsein der in den 1930 bis 1960er Geborenen weitgehend verdrängt. Die Welt des traditionellen Judentums wie die der Tora, des jüdischen Glaubens und der Gebote, der hebräischen Sprache, der synagogalen Dienste, des Kaschruts, der jüdischen Feiertage und sogar weitgehend die jiddische Kultur kommt fast immer nur in den fiktionalen Erinnerungen der Erzähler an deren Großeltern oder in den Exkursen der Autoren in die jüdische Geschichte zum Ausdruck. Für viele Autoren ist das traditionelle Judentum eine wichtige Komponente ihrer Familien- und somit ihrer persönlichen Geschichte, das Objekt der Nostalgie, das unwiederbringlich Verlorene. Jedoch nur in wenigen Fällen konzipiert sich das überlieferte Judentum in den einschlägigen Werken als lebensbestimmendes, sinnstiftendes Element für den Helden/ Ich-Erzähler/Autor. Die Zuwendung zur jüdischen religiösen Tradition in der zeitgenössischen russisch-jüdischen Literatur zeigt sich vielmehr in der individuell-psychologischen oder symbolischen, weit von der Überlieferung entfernten Deutung des Heiligen Buchs (wie z.B. bei Fridrich Gorenštejn oder Efrem Bauch). Das erklärt sich aus der Tatsache, dass die Geschichten der Tora/ des Alten Testaments sowie jüdische Bräuche und die alte jüdische Geschichte von vielen Autoren erst im erwachsenen Alter aufgenommen und durchgearbeitet wurden. Die Rückkehr der atheistisch erzogenen sowjetischen Juden aus den Kreisen der Otkazniki zum traditionellen Judentum in den 1970er Jahren wird immer wieder in der russisch-jüdischen Prosa auch beschrieben: so in den Büchern von Ė. Sevela, D. Šraer-Petrov, L. Ulickaja u.a.
Translation - English Therefore, the question of Jewish identity in the Soviet and post-Soviet context finds itself displaced on a historical and social level, because during this time Russian-Jewish self--image was unable to find nourishment from the religious and ritualistic, the traditional sources of Judaism. On the one hand, the advanced assimilation typical for all Jewish minorities in Europe, on the other, the ban on all things Jewish for political reasons, have to the largest part suppressed the latter from the consciousness of those born between 1930 and 1960. The world of traditional Judaism such as the Torah, of Jewish beliefs and prayers, of Hebrew, of synagogue services, of Kashruts, of the Jewish holidays and far reaching aspects of Jewish culture are only ever present in the narrator’s fictional accounts of their grandparents or in the author’s digressions into Jewish history.
For a number of authors traditional Judaism is an important component of their familial and personal history. It is an object of nostalgia, an irreplaceable loss. However, very rarely in the relevant literature does the inherited Judaism become a life defining, meaningful element for the hero, narrator or author.
However, the growing attention to Jewish religious tradition in contemporary Russian-Jewish literature can be seen in the individual’s psychology or symbolism, and is far removed from the traditional interpretation of the Holy Scriptures (as for example with Fridrich Gorenštejn or Efrem Bauch).This can be explained by the fact that many authors had only begun looking at, and working with, the writings of the Torah or the Old Testament, Jewish customs and the ancient Jewish History, when they were much older. The return to Judaism of the Soviet Jews who were brought up as atheists within the circles of the “Otkazniki” in the 1970s, is often cited in the Russian- Jewish prose: as in the books of Ė. Sevela, D. Šraer-Petrov, L. Ulickaja, to name but a few.
