To understand the ways in which the languages we use guide and misguide our thoughts, to understand, as well, how we got to the point we are at today, it should prove sensible to take a thorough look at the beginnings of man as sound-producing animal.
If language is an intrinsic human faculty - as all evidence suggests it is - it must be rooted in the organic reality of the human body which brings it to life. Although birds can sing and some species, like parrots, are able to mimic human speech remarkably well, birds do not speak and cannot utilize language as humans do. To produce speech, consisting of words, an organism requires both a vocal apparatus capable of bringing forth such sounds in the form of words and a brain apt to control said apparatus. It is the deliberate usage of these components which sets us apart from birds.
Strangely, neither of these requirements set us apart from human ancestors as early as homo heidelbergensis who, living between 600 and 200 thousand years ago, did not yet write, speak, or think in language. It thus appears that ancestors long antedecent homo sapiens sapiens could have spoken just as we do. They had the necessary tools, but they did not use them to make words.
Why, then, did evolution endow them with these features? And how, given these modest beginnings, has language evolved to be able to serve in bringing about such intricate achievements as poetry and science?
To answer these questions, the present chapter explores the origins of language in the human species and the divided structure of the human brain, with its distinct, apparently incompatible modes of apprehending the world in which it exists.

Wenn Sprache eine dem Menschen intrinsische Fähigkeit ist – wofür sämtliche Anzeichen sprechen – so muss sie in der organischen Realität des menschlichen Körpers verwurzelt sein, die sie zum Leben erweckt. Obgleich Vögel singen können und einige Spezies, etwa Papageien, die menschliche Sprache bemerkenswert gut zu imitieren vermögen, sprechen Vögel nicht und können sich Sprache nicht wie Menschen nutzbarmachen. Um aus Wörtern bestehende Sprache zu erzeugen, benötigt ein Organismus sowohl einen Stimmapparat, der zum Hervorbringen solcher Laute in Form von Wörtern im Stande ist, als auch ein Gehirn, das in der Lage ist, besagten Apparat zu steuern. Der bewusste Einsatz dieser Komponenten ist es, der uns von den Vögeln unterscheidet.
Eigenartigerweise hebt uns keine dieser Anforderungen von solch frühen menschlichen Vorfahren wie dem Homo heidelbergensis ab, welcher, vor 600.000 bis 200.000 Jahren lebend, noch nicht in Sprache schrieb, sprach oder dachte. Es scheint also, dass dem Homo sapiens sapiens weit vorangehende Urahnen genauso hätten sprechen können wie wir. Sie besaßen das notwendige Rüstzeug, verwendeten es jedoch nicht, um Wörter zu bilden.
Warum also stattete die Evolution sie mit diesen Fähigkeiten aus? Und wie hat sich Sprache angesichts dieser bescheidenen Anfänge so entwickelt, dass sie dazu beitragen konnte, komplizierte Errungenschaften wie Dichtkunst und Wissenschaften hervorzubringen?
Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen untersucht das vorliegende Kapitel die Ursprünge der Sprache in der menschlichen Spezies und die aufgeteilte Struktur des menschlichen Gehirns mit seinen verschiedenartigen, augenscheinlich unvereinbaren Weisen, die Welt, in der es existiert, wahrzunehmen.

Angry crow that act as homing missiles and explode if contacted. Can still be eaten head-on if Chomp is larger at the time.

Shakey
Bug-eyed tarsier/lemur type creature. Falls into a rage and begins to unpredictably shake around the entire screen.

Croaky
Flying bullfrog like enemy that occasionally spits out a total of three floaties that lure Chomp right to Croaky‘s large gaping maw.
size: 4-6 points: 100
Flappy
Albatross type bird with a giant wingspan that fills the screen horizontally. Chomp can either eat its body if big enough or, otherwise, has to dodge its periodic flapping wings.

Bitey
Fierce, multi-legged centipede. An exclamation mark shows its point of arrival on the top of the screen. Chomp must initially dodge it and then wait until it emerges again at the bottom of the screen, to confront Bitey head-on. This monster has 5 segments and each counts as an individual enemy.

points: 25/segment, a total of 125
Scoring
Each enemy eaten is worth their respective point score.
5 eaten enemies in a row activates a multiplier of 2x points.
10 more → 3x points
15 more → 4x points
20 more → 5x points
25 more → 6x points
30 more → 7x points
In order to achieve and sustain such a score multiplier, the next enemy must be eaten within 2 seconds of the previous one. Otherwise the counter resets.
Chomp‘s largest size is called „Super-Chomp“. While in that mode, every creature eaten is worth 8 times its basic points.
Game Modes
Story Mode: Level based gameplay with bosses after every 3rd area. 11 levels in total.
Freefall: Endless gameplay. All story mode levels appear in sequence and repeat after all 11 are completed. Gameplay steadily gets trickier due to the ever increasing speed. All about the score!

Bitey
Grimmiger, vielbeiniger Tausendfüßler. Ein Ausrufezeichen markiert seinen Ankunftsort am oberen Bildschirmrand. Dieses Monstrum besteht aus 5 Segmenten, von denen jedes als einzelner Gegner zählt.

Chomps größtes Ausmaß wird als „Super-Chomp“ bezeichnet. Innerhalb dieses Modus ist jede gefressene Kreatur das achtfache ihrer eigentlichen Punktzahl wert.
Spielmodi
Story-Modus: Level-basiertes Gameplay mit Endgegnern nach je drei Spielgebieten. Insgesamt elf Level.

Source text - English The four main stylistic variations of the overall Bradshaw Period were organized in simple nomenclature and were defined in chronological order as:
- The early Classic Bradshaw (Realistic and Abstract) phase
- The Complex Bradshaw phase
- The Stylised Bradshaw phase
- The Simple Bradshaw (Gwion) phase
The oldest identified phase of the various stylistic variations that make up the Bradshaw phases (based on superimposed evidence, technique and style) is referred to as the Classic Phase while the last and most basic Bradshaw painted figures is referred to as Simple Bradshaw phase.

The early Classic Realistic Bradshaw figures are confined to the Kimberley coastal river systems and only make up a very small proportion of the Classic figures recorded. Early Classic Abstract figures have a greater spatial distribution, with the artists seeming to move further inland along the river and creek systems.
A distinctive archaeological feature of the Classic Realistic images is that they are almost never found painted on the top of other images, with the artists seeming to prefer a “clean” canvas.
Archaeological evidence also shows that the earliest painters of the Classic phase appeared to be able to paint a naturalistic positioning of the figures with anatomical details highlighting gender differentiation through posture, musculature and posterior size.
The early Classic Bradshaw artists’ ability to paint figures facing into the “canvas” as well as the ability to differentiate “gender” through imagery and posture suggests the artists were trained and knowledgeable artists. While the artists painting the Classic Abstract figures were also able to paint figures facing into the canvas and at times produce even more subtle gender differences, the attention to anatomical detail is no longer apparent.
A distinguishing feature of the early Realistic and Abstract figures is the inclusion of small animals resting directly on either the “hair” or “headdress”. Real “hair” depiction is another distinguishing feature of the early Classic painters. Attached “headdresses” started to appear in the Classic Abstract figures and then kept being a dominating element in all later Bradshaw stylistic variations. (Fig. 4)

Die frühen Klassisch-Realistischen Bradshaw-Abbildungen sind ausnahmslos am küstennahen Gewässernetz des Kimberley anzutreffen und machen nur einen sehr geringen Anteil der bekannten Klassischen Darstellungen aus. Bei Klassisch-Abstrakten Figuren dieses Zeitabschnitts hingegen ist eine weitläufigere räumliche Verteilung festzustellen; ihre Urheber bewegten sich offenbar entlang der Fluss- und Bachläufe landeinwärts.
Ein aus archäologischer Sicht markantes Merkmal der Klassisch-Realistischen Malereien ist, dass sich verschiedene Bilder fast nie überlagern, die Gestalter also “saubere” Arbeitsflächen zu bevorzugen schienen.
Zudem zeigen archäologische Befunde, dass die frühesten Maler dieser Epoche in der Lage waren, ihre Figuren in naturalistischer Position darzustellen und durch anatomische Einzelheiten wie Körperhaltung, Muskulatur und Gesäßumfang Geschlechterunterschiede zu markieren.
Die Befähigung der Schöpfer Klassisch-Realistischer Bradshaw-Motive, ihre Figuren in Richtung der “Leinwand” blicken zu lassen sowie “Geschlechter” durch Bildsprache und Stellung differenziert veranschaulichen zu können, lässt auf Übung und Kenntnisreichtum schließen. Während die Urheber der Klassisch-Abstrakten Abbildungen zwar ebenfalls im Stande waren, besagte Blickrichtung und teils gar noch subtilere Feinheiten bei der Einteilung in Geschlechter abzubilden, ist die Sorgfalt im Umgang mit anatomischen Details nicht mehr erkennbar.
Kennzeichnend für die frühen Realistischen und Abstrakten Motive ist die Einbindung kleiner Tiere, welche unmittelbar entweder auf dem „Haar” oder dem „Kopfschmuck“ der Figuren ruhen. Abbildungen von echtem „Haar” sind ein weiteres für die Maler der frühen Klassischen Periode charakteristisches Merkmal. Angefügter „Kopfschmuck” trat erstmals in den Klassisch-Abstrakten Darstellungen in Erscheinung, um nachfolgend in sämtlichen späteren Bradshaw-Stilphasen als dominierendes Element erhalten zu bleiben. Source text - English Back in the 1960s, when initial lines and dots flickered across then seemingly mythical computer screens and captured merely the odd gamer‘s imagination, surely nobody expected the triumph that was to follow a few decades later: The simple, marginal footnote grew into a global entertainment industry with countless consumers. Delving into foreign worlds, sports competitions in the domestic living room, hands-on fiction - the basic motivations have always remained the same, whereas the appearance of the products has radically changed. Today‘s video games are vastly more elaborate than the early prototypes, the genres are diverse. A rundown:
Adventure
Mental refreshment through solving tricky puzzles and experiencing cinematic storylines caused the classic adventure genre to be the showpiece of the PC gaming industry for a long time, both in terms of quality and sales. Today, however, more intuitive, less intellectual gameplay elements are in favor with the gaming community.
Action
Interactive participation in fictional stories therefore increasingly shifted into the realm of action games. What counts here is rather the player‘s reaction and dexterity, when he flashily keeps opponents at bay with the help of a diverse arsenal of weapons. The first-person shooter variant in particular - realistic shooting games from the player's perspective - enjoys great popularity.
Role-playing game
Role-playing games, so-called RPGs, go one step further. Here, elements of adventure and action games blend together in front of a lush backdrop: The player roams through mostly monolithic fantasy worlds, interacts with numerous characters and defeats enemies by means of skill as well as strategic planning. As the plot unfolds, the main character's abilities grow and flourish depending on player behavior.
Strategy
The aforementioned planning aspect forms the basis of the strategy genre. Commonly set in a specific war scenario, the main task is to cultivate your own military resources in a race against one or more opponents.
Simulation
Strategic calculation is also required in simulation games. In this type of game, a specific, often economic scenario from the real world is recreated in as much detail as possible. The player takes on the role of a company boss, city planner or even God and is supposed to steer the property entrusted to him towards success through clever economic management.
In times of ever-growing Internet bandwidths, digital gaming activities are increasingly shifting into the online realm, across all genres. By now, locking horns with human opponents from all over the world has cast its spell over millions of people. This is the future of computer gaming - the basic motivations, however, remain unchanged.

Adventure
Geistige Erfrischung durch das Lösen kniffliger Rätsel und das Durchleben filmischer Handlungsstränge machten die Gattung des klassischen Abenteuers lange Zeit zum sowohl qualitativen wie auch verkaufstechnischen Prunkstück der PC-Spielebranche. Heute stehen hingegen intuitivere, weniger kopflastige Spielelemente in der Gunst der Spielergemeinde.
Action
Die interaktive Teilnahme an fiktiven Geschichten verlagerte sich daher zunehmend in den Bereich des Actionspiels. Hier zählen vielmehr Reaktion und Geschick des Spielers, wenn er sich mit Hilfe eines vielfältigen Waffenarsenals effektreich Gegner vom Leibe hält. Speziell die Variante des Ego-Shooters - realitätsnahe Schießspiele aus dem Blickwinkel des Spielers - erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit.
Rollenspiel
Einen Schritt weiter gehen Rollenspiele, sog. RPGs. Hier vermischen sich Elemente aus Abenteuer- und Actionspiel vor opulenter Kulisse: Der Spieler durchstreift zumeist monumentale Fantasywelten, interagiert mit zahlreichen Charakteren und besiegt Feinde mittels Geschicklichkeit wie auch strategischer Planung. Im Verlauf der Handlung wachsen und gedeihen die Fähigkeiten des Hauptcharakters je nach Spielerverhalten.
Strategie
Der zuvor erwähnte Planungsaspekt bildet die Grundlage des Strategie-Genres. Gemeinhin in einem bestimmten Kriegsszenario angesiedelt, ist die Hauptaufgabe das Heranzüchten der eigenen Militär-Ressourcen im Wettlauf mit einem oder mehreren Gegnern.
Simulation
Strategisches Kalkül ist auch in Simulationsspielen erforderlich. In dieser Spielart wird ein bestimmtes, oftmals wirtschaftliches Szenario aus der realen Welt möglichst detailgetreu nachgebildet. Der Spieler übernimmt die Rolle eines Unternehmenschefs, Stadtplaners oder gar Gottes und soll dem ihm anvertrauten Objekt durch geschicktes Wirtschaften zum Erfolg verhelfen.
In Zeiten stetig wachsender Internet-Bandbreiten verlagern sich die digitalen Spielaktivitäten genreübergreifend zunehmend in Online-Gefilde. Mittlerweile zieht das Kräftemessen mit menschlichen Gegenspielern aus aller Welt Millionen in seinen Bann. Hier liegt die Zukunft des Computerspiels - die Grundmotivationen aber bleiben unverändert.

Initially, young Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) travelled to placid Freiburg to add the finishing touches to her dancing skills at the municipal ballet school. Soon, however, the unsuspecting woman finds herself trapped in an ominous web of death and madness, with seemingly no way to escape…
Above all, Dario Argento‘s magnum opus impresses with its unique visuals. The breathtaking composition of stage design, lighting and use of colour downright drags the viewer into a cinematic nightmare, which won't let him go until the sinister finale. Despite its overall rather thin plot thread, "Suspiria" also offers enough substance on a thematic level and may confidently be included with the big-time cult classics of horror cinema.

The Kickstarter will continue until August 27, with the game's full release estimated to be in late 2015 or early 2016.
The 7th Guest is a horror/puzzle game released in 1992 by Trilobyte, Inc. Groundbreaking within the realm of PC gaming, The 7th Guest was critically as well as commercially successful due to, at least partly, storytelling that used live actors in full motion video - a first for video games at that time. A sequel, The 11th Hour was released in 1995.
Unfortunately, Trilobyte went out of business soon afterward. Several attempts have been made to develop a sequel since the closure of the company, but none have been successful.
Frustrated by this, a group of fans decided to take matters into their own hands, launching the company Attic Door Productions to produce their own game, called The 13th Doll: A Fan Game of The 7th Guest. The team’s passion for this project garnered the attention of the by then reformed original manufacturer, Trilobyte.
As the holder of rights to the franchise, Trilobyte eventually offered Attic Door Productions a licensing agreement that allows The 13th Doll to be sold as a retail game. This is an unprecedented, historic deal - many fan projects were created previously, but never has one of those been granted the rights to be sold commercially. If there were ever a Cinderella story in game development history, this is it.

III) ON THE CHALLENGES OF TRANSLATION - REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATION
Rather than a simplistic conversion of text from one language to another, translation is a delicate art, a constant balancing act. One must accurately preserve the essence of the original text and convey its inherent meaning and all of its nuances, while preventing the target text from feeling like a contrived and stilted replica of a formerly foreign-language source.
As is often the case with machine (and poor human) translations, simple mistakes are introduced, double meanings are missed or misinterpreted and artificially sounding, at times even newly created expressions appear as part of the translation, due to a lack of understanding of the target culture and its distinct peculiarities. This is especially true for literary texts and subtitles, with their meanings commonly being the consequence of a certain contextual situation, character motivation or subtextual ambiguity.
Oftentimes, these specifics cannot be properly communicated by purely recreating the apparent, superficial words present in the source. Instead, detecting these subtleties in the first place requires more finesse, as does retaining and naturally transferring them to the different context of the target language, which bears its own unique intricacies.
In order to achieve the demanding goal of providing precise, yet elegantly customized translation results, several requirements have to be met:
1. The translator needs to have gained substantial proficiency in the source language and possess a comprehensive understanding of its finer points.
2. An extensive mastery of the translator's native tongue must have been attained, including a vast knowledge of its many subtle facets and stylistic variations.
3. When translating any text, the spirit of the foreign source has to be accurately maintained, while the result must be tailored to the target language and its corresponding culture.
Why am I qualified to meet these challenges?
1. Professionally, I have been leading a bilingual life for a great number of years. Thanks to my aforementioned work practice in anglophone companies, I have become deeply familiar with the English language. The daily interaction and cooperation with native speakers and numerous management tasks, such as offering customer support, participating in business meetings or serving as a mediator in negotiations, have caused the language to become second nature to me.
