English to Ukrainian: How does Erich Auerbach contrast the Homeric and biblical styles in "Odysseus's Scar"? General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English How does Erich Auerbach contrast the Homeric and biblical styles in "Odysseus's Scar"?
Erich Auerbach is the author of “Mimesis”, which is a fundamental study on the depiction of reality in Western European literature, in his essay “Odysseus` scar”, that opens the book, gives an analysis of the style of Homer`s Odyssey and the Old Testament`s story about the temptation of Abraham. Auerbach believed that Homer`s texts and the Bible contain opposite tendencies, which appear at different stages of the historical and literary process and underline the two main types of depiction of reality in literature.
In the “Odyssey”, a lot of time is dedicated to descriptions of movements, gestures and nothing is ever left out of sight. Auerbach pointed out that that is a Homeric narrative, that`s always present in his works. Everything is plain and visible. Even during the most dramatical moments we are notified about the details of the story. For example, the part where Odyssey grabs the old maid by her throat with his right hand to prevent her from talking, while pulling her closer with his left hand. This style, in which, according to Auerbach, the element of tension is expressed, everything is clearly outlined, men and things stand out, is opposed by the biblical style with its emphasis on the tragic and problematic aspects of human existence, with a heightened interest in its “ends” and “beginnings”. In biblical narrative, the most of the world is not shown, there`s mystery and a lot of aspects are being hidden from the reader, we lack details.
Erich Auerbach points out a very interesting difference between the Bible and the Homeric work, which is the presence and description of God. In Odyssey Gods are basically the same as regular people, since the story is fully made up. Whereas in the Old Testament God is described as a powerful sublime, that`s nothing like a human being.
Another big contrast between the two styles, according to Erich Auerbach is the absence of lessons in Homer`s stories. The plot is completely fictional and has no historical background, his stories don`t require interpretation. Meanwhile, the Old Testament has pieces of historical truths, unilluminated backgrounds and moral depth. Contrary to Odyssey, the biblical text has to be interpreted in order to be understood.
Translation - Ukrainian
