French term

des arrêtes prononcées

French to English Other Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Anybody know about cars and have a great way to word this in English?

Context:

@ Didier I like " bold lines "
Didier Fourcot May 29, 2011:
Bold lines and Aston Martin http://www.dancewithshadows.com/autoindia/aston-martin-cars-...
The DBS is an aggressive Aston Martin, aerodynamically excellent with its superfluous spoilers and having bold lines running along from the bonnet to boot lid.

The bold lines give the concept a sturdy appearance, while the rear view has an almost Aston Martin-like appearance

So we weren’t fooled by the drop-dead gorgeous looks, bold lines, muscular physic or the spectacular Aston Martin-ish rear end

strong lines

Un 'arête' is a ridge (please note I'm assuming a typo in the source term)
So the lines of the car 'stick out' in places and are easily noticed
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think an 'arête' is a more specifically physical thing than the more abstract 'lines'

agree Didier Fourcot : Often saw also "bold lines", "arête" (one 'r') is technically the edge of a fold, and these are the folds in metal seet that create the lines of a car body

highlighted / emphasized splitters

.

This splitter extends straight out, parallel to the ground, and can be made of carbon fiber or other stiff material.

It is attached to the bottom of the front bumper, and may also be supported by two or more support rods at some distance forward of the bumper mounting points. These support rods ensure that the splitter stays parallel to the ground, even when there are outside forces around the splitter.

mais les arêtes prononcées des ailes avant et arrière sont plus audacieuses. Il n'y a pas à dire, la Camaro en met plein la vue et fait très « voiture concept ».
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think 'splitter' is something quite different from 'arête' here.

salut .Oui je cherche toujours ( et avec grand plaisir : les camaros , challenger etc ....)

emphasized or strong edges

I don't think it is about a specific part of the car , but all the edges

in car descriptions , I found " arêtes " in almost all parts of the car :
wings , spoilers , etc .......

It tapers off to two slim fins extending to the trailing edge of the car, emphasizing the elongated silhouette.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Not general edges, but the kind of 'angle' that runs along the ength of the car, as is very fashionable at the moment in car design.

pronounced features (and muscular lines)

I don't see why "prononcé" should necessarily be abandoned here, and is not a gallicism. One just has to imagine (not easy, I know) that one is a motor journalist with a talent for gushing and hyperbolic phrases.

As an aside, should that not be "arêtes" (as Tony has correctly spelt it)?
