For anyone interested, there usually is a difference between “a long haul” and “the long haul.”

A long haul = a difficult road ahead.
The long haul = the long term.

tambem concordo consigo Vitor, o "prazo" eh mais usado quando se fala por exemplo de planos/projectos a longo prazo, prazos de validade, prazos para entrega, etc. e no contexto em causa, trata-se de avisar/preparar o pessoal para um longo periodo de trabalho, um periodo de trabalho que se vai alongar e que vai exigir muito compromisso deles, ou seja vai ser um trabalhao!!:) e nao vai ser apenas um acontecimento de fim-de-semana (como diz logo a seguir).

Creio que devo realçar que este "long haul" refere-se a "um longo período/intervalo de tempo".
Em Economia e Gestão (como neste caso), a expressão PT "longo prazo" é uma expressão "perigosa" porque está quase exclusivamente consagrada para a aceção "(no futuro) a mais de um ano" (pelo menos), ou "(no futuro) a mais de 3/5 anos" ou quanto muito apenas "no futuro".

Creio que o sentido desta expressão "get ready for the long haul" é "preparar-se para a longa jornada (de trabalho)" no sentido de "preparar-se para uma tarefa difícil que leva muito tempo e muito esforço para concluir" (vd links). É mais ou menos a aceção sugerida pela Rir, e, no sentido figurado, pela Teresa ("uma longa travessia/jornada").

Creio que neste caso a expressão idiomática "long haul" tem mesmo este duplo sentido: tarefa árdua + durante muito tempo/longo período de tempo. Note-se que o texto refere ambas as situações: o maior esforço exigido aos retalhistas ("increasingly difficult", "flexibility to respond") + durante muito tempo ("for weeks on end", "long haul", "no longer a one-weekend").
