Translation - Persian (Farsi) 1. Introduction
Structure torsion has been known to be one of the injury causes of structures during powerful earthquakes. 42% of the damages to buildings in 1985 earthquake of Mexico due to torsional effects showed that asymmetric buildings are highly vulnerable in terms of stiffness and resistance in plan [1]. The effect of torsion can come into being by irregularities in plan, center of mass, hardness or distribution of resistance. Research results have shown that the eccentricity of design not only depends on the static eccentricity (Distance between the center of mass and stiffness), but also on other dynamic features such as time cycle, aspect ratio of the plan with respect to natural torsional frequency ratio to lateral of the structure [2]. Regulations have provided guidelines to design asymmetric structures, but the destruction of the designed buildings according to the regulations in the past earthquakes and also numerous researches conducted in the field of torsion control criteria in regulations indicate the need to improve these criteria for better performance of asymmetric structures in earthquakes [3]. This study indulges in the comparison of torsion effect in high rising, medium rising and low rising steel structures.
2. Research method
In this research, to investigate the effect of case study variables on torsional component of earthquakes in buildings, meaning eccentricity and the height of the structure, 3 steel building groups having 1, five and ten story, each representing low, medium and high-rise steel buildings with braced frames system have been considered. For each of these groups, five models with varying eccentricities have been defined in order to investigate the way in which the eccentricity variable affects the vulnerability of the structures. Crossed bracing is the resistant component against the lateral forces of the considered systems. In these models, eccentricities are created by locating multiple braced frames in the plan. To design the buildings SAP 2000 software was used. According to sixth topic of loading structures [4], seismic loading of structures has been done according to the regulation 2800 of designing of structures against earthquake loads [5] and building designs have been done according to the regulation of tenth topic of national building rules of Iran [6]. Also, equivalent static analysis is used for the initial analysis and structures were designed considering the results of these analyses. Seven accelerograms related to type II soil were used for non-linear dynamical analysis. These accelerograms were scaled against the Iran earthquake loads according to the criteria in regulation 2800 of structure designs. Accelerograms are so scaled that their response range is registered in the time limit of 0.2 T to 1.5 T of the standard design range. In order to survey the actual behavior of the buildings, non-linear dynamic analysis was done by SAP 2000 and finally, outputs of the software will be compared in all 3 structure groups.
3. Structural models in the survey
In this study, 3 structure groups of 1, 5 and 10 story with convergent steel bracing system in both directions, with five different location types of the braced frames, have been modeled. The dimension of the plan is 12 * 20 meters and the height of the structure in each floor is considered to be 3 meters. In figure number 1, five different plans in terms of eccentricities are visible which all have been applied to each of those 3 groups. Also, general specifications and eccentricities of models are mentioned in diagrams 1, 2 and 3.
4. Loading
Live, dead and other loads have been calculated according to topics of national building rules and regulation 2800 of structure designs against earthquakes. In this case, the dead weight borne by the roof is equivalent to 680 kg per meter square and the live weight is 150 kg per square meter.
5. Introduction to seismic load
To stimulate the considered systems to conduct the analysis of non-linear timing record from 7 registered earthquake groups in type II soil, table number 4 has been used. Choosing records have been done according to appendix A, paragraph 9A of FEMA 695 regulation [7] and in the end, it has been received from PEER 1 website affiliated to Berkeley university. To compare accelerograms, the proposed method by regulation 2800 of Iran, based on first period modes of structures, has been used. Moreover, for each of longitudinal and transverse ranges, roots of SRSS squares have been calculated and finally, scale coefficient for each earthquake was calculated using the comparison with range of regulation in time period 0.2 T to 1.5 T. Also, according to the diagrams of figure 2 A, B and C, the scaled response range of accelerograms have been sketched for one, five and ten story models.
6. Results of non-linear dynamic analyses
After designing the structures, in order to investigate the actual behavior of the buildings, non-linear dynamic analysis was done by SAP 2000 that are mentioned in the following sections for each of three groups:
6.1 Results of the one story structure analysis
6.1.1 Relative story drift in one story structure models
Mean story drift in models 1 – 5 of one story structure models are visible in diagram of figure 3 that shows the increase in drift with increase in eccentricity. The diagram shows that the amounts of relative story drift in the most asymmetric one story models of this study, meaning models 4 (X3) and 5 (X2), are more than the allowable values in regulations of Iran. In figure 4, diagram of increasing maximum drift in one story structure models with increase in eccentricities can be investigated.
6.1.2 Relative torsional angle of structure’s stories (Ɵ) in one story structure models
In this study, torsion is surveyed with relative torsional angle of structure’s stories (Ɵ). Relative torsional angle (Ɵ) is defined by the following relation:
Ɵ = (Δ2 – Δ1)/b (Relation 1)
Where the nominator is the difference in relative drift of stories in 2 extreme points in a direction being investigated in this study (to place braced frames of middle opening) and b is the length of the plan in the same direction where in this study, according to the direction of the said braced frames, b = 20 has been considered. In the diagram of figure 6, ‘e’ stands for eccentricity, giving the concept of the distance between the center of stiffness of the structure and the center of mass of the structure [8].
Values of the torsions created, is able to be seen in the diagram of figure 5. Also, effect of eccentricity on relative drift of stories have been mentioned in diagram of figure 6 [9].
In figure 7, diagram of maximum drift of all 5 one story structure models have been shown in on linear diagram.
6.1.3 Vulnerability coefficient in one story structure models
In this study, the definition of presumptive plastic joints of FEMA [10] in dynamic behavior modeling of structure has been used and to survey the vulnerability, a relation named vulnerability coefficient or vulnerability ratio have been used. Vulnerability ratio has a direct relation to the number of created plastic joints in the structure and is defined by relation 2:
Vulnerability Ratio = (Number of created plastic joints in the structure)/
(Sum of number of columns and braced frames) (Relation 2)
Since in steel braced frame system, plastic joints are not formed at the location of bars, number of bars are not contributing in this relation. It is obvious that formula 2 is after introducing vulnerability ratio as a relation that shows the probability of creation of number of plastic joints in each member.
Plastic joints in SAP 2000 are introduced according to FEMA regulation. In SAP 2000 software, plastic joints are shown with colors where colors are defined according to figure 8 and as we move from purple to red, joints are created with more force and shows that the destruction in that section has been more. The mean number of created joints and vulnerability ratio in one story structure models are presented in table 5. Also, number of columns and braces of each model and vulnerability ratio of each model have been mentioned. In figure 9, vulnerability ratio of one story models are shown in the diagram. [11]
According to table 5, it is seen that in one story models, as the surveyed model gets more asymmetric, vulnerability ratio increases, except model 4 (X3) that has vulnerability ratio of 0.42 and its value is more than model 5 (X2), which is more asymmetric. In table 6 mentioned below, details of created joints in model 4 (X3) and model 5 (X2) are compared. Comparing these diagrams show that even in the quality of joints, model 4 (X3) shows a more vulnerable behavior than model 5 (X2).
The reason is probably the decrease in stiffness and softening of model 4 (X3) with respect to model 5 (X2) that has resulted model 5 (X2) to be placed on decreasing arm of the range curve of construction site that resulted in decreasing force of earthquake on this model and consequently decreasing in vulnerability.
To investigate this problem, we study the positional site of these two models on construction site range. In table 7, mode one period of these models are reviewed that confirms the assumption made in the previous paragraph.
6.2 Results of the five story structure analysis
6.2.1 Relative story drift in five story structure models
Diagram of maximum drift in five story structure models can be discussed in figure 10.
6.2.2 Relative torsional angle of structure’s stories (Ɵ) in five story structure models
Values of torsions made are able to be seen in diagram of figure 11. Also, effect of eccentricity on relative drift is presented in diagram of figure 12. [12]
6.2.3 Vulnerability ratio in five story structure models
Mean number of joints created in five story models are mentioned in table 8. Also, number of columns and braces for each model and vulnerability coefficient of each one have been mentioned. In figure 13, diagram of vulnerability ratio of five story models are shown as well.
6.3 Results of the ten story structure analysis
6.3.1 Relative story drift in five story structure models
Diagram of maximum drift in five story structure models can be discussed in figure 14.
6.3.2 Relative torsional angle of structure’s stories (Ɵ) in five story structure models
Values of torsions made are able to be seen in diagram of figure 15.
It can be understood from figure 4 that the largest torsion in all 10 story models happened on the ninth floor. And that on average it can be concluded that after the 9th floor, 10th floor has experienced the largest torsion and after that 8th to first floor have experienced the largest to the lowest torsions in ten story structures accordingly. [13]
6.3.3 Vulnerability ratio in ten story structure models
Mean number of created joints in 10 story structure models are mentioned in table 9. Also, number of columns and braces for each model and vulnerability coefficient of each one have been mentioned. In figure 16, diagram of vulnerability ratio of ten story models are shown as well.
7. Comparison of analysis of data on one, five and ten story structures
7.1 Torsional behavior analysis of structures
7.1.1 Torsional behavior analysis of structures in heights
In diagram of figure 17, values of relative torsional angle of floors in all 15 models of this study have been presented. Therefore, comparison of the torsions created in all floors in all models can easily be surveyed. To investigate the part of the diagram which shows the torsion values on first floor more accurately, it has been magnified in figure 18.
Also, in table 10, relative torsion angles of the structure stories in each floor is provided.
From the diagrams of figure 17, can be understood that the maximum torsion in all 10 story structure models is greater that maximum torsion of 5 story models. Although except model 1 in 10 story structures that has symmetric ten story model and a smaller torsion is created in it. Maximum torsion in all five story models is 0.005 whereas in comparison to ten story models which is 0.04, that is something around 12%.
Also, the maximum torsion in all one story models is equivalent to 0.003 and in comparison to the maximum torsion of 10 story models is almost 7%. Values of maximum torsion created in 1, 5 and 10 story models are mentioned in table 10.
This is despite the fact that maximum torsion created in all one and five story structures has happened in the most asymmetric model, meaning model 5 but in 10 story models it has happened in model 4. The reason of this is reduction of stiffness and softening of model 4 (X3) in comparison to model 5 (X2) that has caused model 5 to be placed on decreasing arm of the construction site range curve. Also, by decreasing the force of earthquake, the created torsion decreases as well. To study the positional situation of these two models on construction site range, we will discuss the first mode period of these models. In table 11, first mode period and ‘Sa’ values of these models are shown that confirms the assumption made in previous paragraph.
To survey the points of the structure that have maximum created torsions, it is clearly seen in diagram of figure 17 that one story models, value of torsion in the most asymmetric model, meaning model 5 and 4, are greater than the torsion values in first floor of five and ten story structures.
Also, it is seen that the maximum torsion in five story structures are on third floor and in the most asymmetric model, meaning model 5, has happened and by surveying the table 10 we understand that in comparison to the maximum torsion created in ten story structures, except symmetric model 1, torsion of five story buildings were always lower with a slight difference.
Observations show that five story structure shows a decrease in torsion after the third floor that in the light of extra load on the floors and of course, modal behavior of the structure, was predictable. In surveying ten story structures it is seen that the maximum torsion has happened on the ninth floor.
Another point is in the shape of the models that can be understood that in 5 story structure, the behavior is more like the second mode whereas in ten story structure, behavior of the structure has become more close to third mode or the next modes.
7.1.2 Torsional behavior analysis of structures with increase in eccentricity
By observing diagrams of figure 17, what is obviously clear is that in all models of 1, 5 and 10 story models, structure endures more torsion by increase in eccentricity. But the interesting point of this diagram is that when the structure is symmetric and the center of mass is on center of stiffness, the amount of torsion that the structure endures is extremely low in comparison to all other models. To the extent that we can say that the structures do not endure torsion. These observations are substantial reasons on why regulations emphasize to use symmetry in structure designs.
7.2 Analysis of relative drift of floors
7.2.1 Analysis of relative drift of floors in heights
In diagram of figure 19 values of relative drift of floors in all 15 models of this study have been presented that can therefore easily be used to compare the values of created torsion in all floors of all models.
To investigate more accurately, a part of this diagram that shows the values of relative drift on first floor is magnified in figure 20.
In diagrams of figure 19, it is seen that the maximum relative drift of floors, except model 1 that is a symmetric ten story model, in almost all ten story models is more than all five story models.
Some important points in this diagram is that in models with equal eccentricities, we see that almost higher the structure is, higher is the value of the relative drift of floors.
This is despite the fact that maximum created relative drift of floors in all one and five story structures have happened in the most asymmetric model, meaning model 5 but has happened in model 4 of ten story structures. This is due to reduction in stiffness and softening of model 4 (X3) in comparison to model 5 (X2) that has caused model 5 (X2) to be placed on the decreasing arm of the construction site range curve and by decrease in earthquake force, relative drift of the floors decrease as well. This issue is discussed at the end of section 7.1.1 and in table 11.
Values of maximum created relative drift of floors in all models of 1, 5 and 10 story structures are mentioned in table 12.
7.2.2 Analysis of relative drift of floors in structures with increase in eccentricities
By observing diagrams of figure 19, what is obviously clear is the fact that in all models of 1, 5 and 10 story structures, relative drift of the floors increases with an increase in eccentricities; but the interesting point of this diagram is that when the structure is symmetric and its center of mass coincides with its stiffness center, relative drift of floors that the structure endures is extremely lower than other models. And these observations are substantial reasons for regulations to emphasize on using symmetric designs in designing structures.
7.3 Analysis of vulnerability of structures
7.3.1 Analysis of vulnerability of structures with increase in height
Table 13 discusses the mean vulnerability ratios of all models with increase in height.
Mean values of table 13 represent a decrease in vulnerability ratio with increase in height.
An important point to consider in this situation is that according to the definition of vulnerability relation (Relation 2), the sum of number of joints created are used to define vulnerability ratio because every joint represents a damage and damages entail restoration and cost of repair. So decrease in vulnerability ratio by increase in height in the models of this study can be because of the reason that as the structure has more height, profile number of bars, columns and braces increase and the energy of earthquakes gets distributed in more lateral cross sections.
7.3.2 Analysis of vulnerability of structures with increase in eccentricities
Given that main focus of this study is on the torsion of structures, vulnerability of structures under the created torsion is also implicitly discussed. In surveying the vulnerability ratio in the study, we only mentioned generally in a way that the quality of created joints and the creation position of the joints are not considered.
In table 14 that is following, values of vulnerability ratios in all models of this study have been provided.
As it is perceived by the mean column of table 14, the more asymmetric a structure is, the more will be its vulnerability.
Although, in mean column, value of mean vulnerability ratio in model 4 is more than model 5 and is due to the unprecedented increase in vulnerability ratio of model 4 in one story structures which its reason were presented in details in results section of one story structure at the beginning of this chapter. But this issue does not tarnish the concluding process of increasing scheme of vulnerability of structures with increase in eccentricity.
8. Conclusion
8.1 Analysis and comparison of relative torsion results of structure floors (Ɵ)
As it is observed in figure 17, in general comparison of all data based on two variables of height and eccentricity, it can be summarized that in general, as the height of the structure increases (with constant eccentricity) value of relative torsion angle of structure floors also increases that shows the increase in the amount of torsion.
By observing the table 10 also it can be understood that what an important role plays height variable in created torsion value in structures so that the maximum value of relative torsional angle of the floors in 1 and 5 story structure models are only 7% and 12% of its analogous quantity in 10 story structure models that are extremely low in comparison to the results of torsional data in ten story structure models.
Also in the case that height is kept as constant, with increase in eccentricity, a palpable increase in the amount of torsion can be seen. Observations indicate the fact that relative torsional angle of the floors is more sensitive to height variable in comparison to eccentricity variable.
8.2 Analysis and comparison of drift ratio data results of floors
Drift ratio data results of floors also almost obeys the same existing scheme of the data results of torsional angles of the floors so that by increasing the height variable, drift ratio increases.
Figure 19 clearly shows that the maximum created drift in 5 and 10 story structure models do not have a significant difference. Results of table 12 also confirms the same issue and shows that the maximum relative drift ratio of the floors in one story structure models is equivalent to 51% and in 5 story structure models is equivalent to 97% of the analogous values in 10 story structure models.
And indicates that relative torsional angles of floors (Ɵ) is more sensitive to height variable in comparison with maximum relative drift ratio.
Also, in comparison of data results of relative drift ratio of floors, where height variable is kept as constant, drift always increases.
8.3 Analysis and comparison of data results of vulnerability ratio
By having a close look at table 14, the increasing trend of mean vulnerability ratio with increase in eccentricity can easily be seen that shows the increase in number of created plastic joints with increase in eccentricity.
But the existing results in table 14 indicates that as the height of the building increases, mean vulnerability ratio decreases and its cause can be seen as the decrease in stiffness of structures in high rising models in comparison with low rise building that shows the feasibility of creating joints in stiff structures to be more probable than soft structures.
8.4 Analysis and general conclusion
The important factor in general conclusion is that the conducted studies in this research show that in terms of structural vulnerability and damage index, low rising structures are more sensitive to torsion whereas in terms of vulnerability in non-structural elements, high rising structures endure more torsion and drift and are more vulnerable in this term. By comparing torsion effect in high rising, medium rising and low rising structures, it is seen that by increasing the eccentricity, structures experience a more relative torsion whereas by increase in height of the structures, the torsion that is endured by the structures are multiplied. Vulnerability coefficient of structure due to torsion, increases with increase in eccentricity and this is despite the fact that vulnerability decreases with increase in height.
Also, the results of this research confirms the correctness of the claim in seismic regulations that symmetric models will be more secure than asymmetric structures in earthquakes.
