Bio

My name is Viktória Kondi and I live in Budapest, Hungary. I'm a freelance translator specialising in English-Hungarian documentary and theatre translations.

I’m happy to translate from English or from French into Hungarian, which is my mother tongue, but I’m equally happy to translate Hungarian texts into English. I work closely with a native English proof-reader and this cooperation guarantees that the meaning of the source text is conveyed faithfully to the target language.

I specialise in translating audio-visual materials, series, and documentaries. I've worked on various projects: I translate for film festivals (most often for BIDF) and streaming service providers, work on theatre plays and marketing materials as well.

When translating audio-visual content, I’m open to work without a script and timecode the subtitles, if it is necessary. I have also experience working with non-English language films with a timecoded, English translation. I usually work in Subtitle Edit or the clients preferred online subtitling platforms.

When interpreting, I usually do chouchoutage (when there is only one or two people in a larger group who need interpreting and the interpreter whispers the translation in their ears) and consecutive interpreting (when the speaker says a few sentences and the translator repeats it to the audience after). I mostly work in person, but I am also open to online interpreting solutions.

Having graduated from university, I worked as a project manager for a translation agency and I've learnt a lot about what the priorities of the agencies are and what makes cooperation effective.

In my work, I aim to be punctual both with respect to deadlines and to the meaning of the text. I take into consideration the purpose of the translation and try to solve the technical issues with CAT-tools on my own; however, I'm not afraid to ask if I need advice.

What I love most about my work is that I can get involved in various fields and types of texts so I learn something new about the world every day.
