Hungarian to English: Biofuels in an international context
Source text - Hungarian Brazíliában cukornádból, az USA-ban és az EU-ban elsősorban gabonafélékből állítják elő az etanolt, míg a biodízel-gyártásban a repce és szója, valamint a pálmaolaj a leggyakoribb nyersanyag. A globális cukor- és kukoricatermelés több mint 10%-ából készítenek etanolt, a világ növényolaj-előállításának már 5%-át biodízelgyártásra használják fel. A világ dilemmája az élelmiszercélú nyersanyagokért folytatott verseny az élelmiszer-, a takarmány- és a bioüzemanyag-ipar között. A világ népességének növekedésével párhuzamosan nő a takarmány, illetve a hús iránti globális kereslet is. Ma nincs elegendő nyersanyag a világon élelmiszer-, takarmány- és bioüzemanyag-gyártáshoz, a fosszilis üzemanyag 5%-nál nagyobb arányú helyettesítése bioüzemanyaggal pedig már akkora területet vonna el az élelmiszer-, takarmány- és rostnövények termelése elől, ami veszélyeztetné a globális élelmezés-biztonságot. Ezért is sürgős feladat, hogy a cellulóztartalmú nyersanyagból készített bioüzemanyag minél előbb piaci bevezetésre kerüljön. Mivel a takarmánycélú nyersanyag kínálata folyamatosan szűkül, kulcskérdés a DDGS rosttartalmának vagy a cellulóznak a hasznosítása mind a takarmány-, mind a bioüzemanyag-gyártásban. Az ehhez szükséges technológia (fermentáció) alkalmazása központi szerepet fog játszani a jövőben. A bioüzemanyag-előállítás átgondolatlan növelése a mai technológiai szint mellett az olajfüggőség helyett bioüzemanyag- vagy élelmiszerfüggőséget idézhet elő.
A globális energiafelhasználásban a biomassza részaránya 11%. Az OECD tagországokban a megújuló energiaforrások az összes elsődleges energiafelhasználás 6%-át teszik ki. Ma a közlekedési szektor energiaigényének mintegy 1%-át elégíti ki a bioüzemanyag (energia-egyenértékben), 2012-re az etanol a globális benzinfogyasztás 6%-át, a biodízel a globális gázolajfogyasztás 1%-át fogja helyettesíteni. 2025-re a világ üzemanyag-felhasználásának is csupán 10%-át, 2050-re pedig 25%-át (ennek felét első generációs technológia, másik felét második generációs technológia alkalmazásával állítják elő) fedezi a bioüzemanyag. A bioüzemanyag-termelésnek a jövőben még számos akadállyal kell megküzdenie, egyébként a vízkészlet, a kiváló minőségű termőföld és a biodiverzitás könnyen áldozat lehet a járműhasználat oltárán.
Translation - English In Brazil, sugar cane is the base material of ethanol production, whereas in the US and the EU grain crops are most heavily employed for the purpose. Rape-seed, soy and palm oil are the most common base materials in biodiesel production. Over 10 percent of the global sugar and maize produce is used for ethanol production, whereas 5 percent of the world’s vegetable oil production is utilised for biodiesel. The competition between the food, animal feed and biofuel industries for food raw materials has become a global dilemma. The growth of the world’s population is accompanied by increasing global demand for fodder and meat. While there is a global shortage of raw material resources for food, fodder and biofuel production, the sheer size of the area required if we were to substitute fossil fuels with biofuel to an extent over 5 percent would endanger global food security. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency to resolve the issue of introducing cellulosic biofuels to the market. Since the supply of raw feed materials continues to decline, it is a key issue to utilise DDGS fibres or cellulose in the manufacturing of both animal feeds and biofuels. The adoption of the required technology (fermentation) will play a central role in the future. By increasing biofuel production without proper consideration at the current technological level, we run the risk of generating a dependence on biofuels or food in the place of our current dependence on oil.
Biomass accounts for 11 percent of the global consumption of energy. In OECD members, renewable energy sources represent 6 percent of the total primary energy consumption. While biofuels are currently used to satisfy app. 1 percent of the energy needs in transport (in energy equivalent), by 2012 ethanol and biodiesel are expected to replace 6 and 1 percent respectively of the global gasoline and diesel fuel consumption. Even in 2025 and 2050 respectively, only 10 and 25 percent of the global fuel consumption will be met by biofuels (half of which will be produced by 1st and the other half by 2nd generation technology). Biofuel manufacturing will still need to cope with a number of obstacles in the future in order to prevent the water supply, prime quality agricultural land or biodiversity from falling victims to motoring.
