Angela Greenfield Feb 28, 2011:
No problem. I thought of it myself after I had already posted the answer. :-)

Decompressing Angela, I think your submission is very clever, and might be the best translation for *разрядка* overall.

However, I just can't use it in my translation due to the airplane setting (too much possible association with airplane "decompression", a totally different phenomenon).

So this is an example of a PERFECT translation, which nonetheless doesn't fit the context. Thanks anyways :)

thaw out (relax)

(with customs (the customs stress) now behind us), the passengers (on the plane) started to relax (or “to thaw out”), everybody was quiet, nobody felt like talking...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This comes closest to *decompressing* (which I could not use due to possible confusion in the airplane context). *Relax* has a regenerative tone, while *drained* and *worn out* both imply ongoing fatigue."

Russian term (edited): настала разрядка

felt drained (of energy)

Интересный вопрос, Полина. Я неуверена, что в английском есть точный эквивалент "разрядке" в этом смысле. Я бы перефразировала предложение: "On the plane we felt drained of all energy."
