3.Co2 market overview
Facts and figures GHG:
Greenhouse gases are present in the atmosphere naturally, released by natural sources, or formed from secondary reactions taking place in the atmosphere. They include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. In the last 200 years, mankind has been releasing substantial quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These extra emissions are increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, enhancing the natural greenhouse effect, which is believed to be causing global warming. While man-made greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, some like the CFCs are completely new to the atmosphere.
Natural sources of carbon dioxide include the respiration (breathing) of animals and plants, and evaporation from the oceans. Together, these natural sources release about 150 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, far outweighing the 7 billion tonnes of man-made emissions from fossil fuel burning, waste incineration, deforestation and cement manufacture. Nevertheless, natural removal processes, such as photosynthesis by land and ocean-dwelling plant species, cannot keep pace with this extra input of man-made carbon dioxide, and consequently the gas is building up in the atmosphere.

Source text - English 7.Market overview:
Europe is taking the lead in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trading. On July 22, 2003 the European Council approved a Directive1 setting the framework for an EU-wide system of GHG emission allowance trading on Company level.
This European Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) will start 1 January 2005. The Directive requires each Member State to impose binding caps on emissions of CO2 from installations involved in energy activities; the
production and processing of ferrous metals; the mineral industry (e.g. cement, glass or ceramic production); and pulp, paper or board production. Other GHGs and sectors will be added in later periods.
The EU ETS is seen as the essential measure for the European Community (EC) and its Members to fulfil its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol to reducing their aggregate anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases listed in Annex A to the Kyoto Protocol by 8 % compared to 1990 levels in the period 2008 to 2012.
