I called by today to talk to Pascale, who will be leading the boating party, currently numbering 17.

I have arranged for us to meet her at Vielmur, after leaving some cars at Serviès on the way, as she can only get 9 people in her bus. We can than drive from Serviès back to Vielmur to pick up the other cars at the end. We need to work out the seating before we start drinking apéros.
The boats (called “sit-on-tops” in French) are quite safe and unsinkable and Pascale has a compulsory lifejacket for each person. We are advised to wear t-shirts, shorts (or swimming trunks) and sneakers. It is strongly recommended to take a spare set of clothes “for the unlikely event of a sudden fall in cabin pressure”. This means we will get wet.

Pour ceux qui ont peur de faire trop de sport : rappelez-vous que le groupe comprend un mec assez gros et âgé de 64 ans…
Il est prévu que nous allons rencontrer Pascale à Vielmur, après avoir laissé des voitures à Serviès, car elle ne peut transporter que 9 personnes dans son bus. Après on va chercher les autres voitures à Vielmur. Il va falloir déterminer le placement des gens avant l’apéro.
Les bateaux (on les appelle “sit-on-tops” en français) sont tout-à-fait sûr et insubmersible et Pascal apporte un gilet de sauvetage obligatoire pour chaque personne. Elle nous conseille de porter un t-shirt, des culottes (ou maillot de bain) et des basket. Elle a chaleureusement recommandé d’apporter des vêtements supplémentaires « pour le cas improbable d’une chute subite de pression dans la cabine ». @Antonia: well, you know what they say in Hamburg: there’s no such thing as bad weather, just people wearing the wrong clothes... it’s probably a good idea to bring an extra sweater and be prepared to take it off when we warm up. You can decide what you want to do on Saturday, as Pascale has the boats at the river in Vielmur and will only get out those we need. @Sabine: many thanks for this (got a good link for me?) – please keep us posted. My reading of the overall situation for the area is that the present cold front will move down to the Mediterranean coast by Thursday evening, to be replaced by a warm front on Friday. Saturday should be cloudy at times but free of rain, with temperatures in the 20s.
@tous: est-ce qu’il y a des problèmes de compréhension, surtout au sujet des directions pour arriver ici ? Je traduirai tout ce qu’il faut en français : ce n’est pas que je pense qu’il faut que tout le monde parle anglais, c’est que je trouve que mon français est affreux… contactez-moi par mail s’il y a des questions.

Rod, I thought maybe I could put 2 extra seats in the Espace (total 7, driver included, 3 seats available for whoever wants a lift!), to make the driving arrangement from Serviès to Vielmur and back easier. Attila, it would be great to meet you again !

@canoers: we were up at Pascale's with the "final" numbers yesterday. She was more forthcoming with details than last time: she has 10 doubles and 5 singles up at Vielmur, so since we now have 20 participants, we can still take another 5 last-minute bookings.

She suggested distributing the cars to Serviès and Vielmur such that the cars at Serviès can go straight back to La Brunié (we're talking about a 10-minute drive!) while a small party – preferably strong men – accompany her back to Vielmur to help store the boats and then pick up our cars. We can discuss this at La Brunié, but, as I said, before l'apéro! (I’ll try and find a bit of paper.)
@pétanquers: I’ve never played pétanque, but there is at least one spare set of boules here. I hope a) someone knows the rules and b) the “gravier” is just right for pétanquing. In any event the wine stays here, so comfort is at hand…
@all: final touches.
getting here: the turn off the D84 is signposted to Lacapelle, and there's a sign with a white horse's head on each side of the turn. Up the hill, pigeonnier on your left, large house on your right. Turn right after the house (I'll put up my silly "P" sign) and park under and around the tree. The party is on the front lawn.
numbers: those who haven’t yet done so, please don’t forget to toggle your “will attend” to “yes” or “no” in the far right column, so we know how much food to buy.
money: we shall be collecting the total cost divided by the number of adults from (or for) each adult, children free. Last year it was ten euros each. Please remember to bring enough cash (it’s 20 km to my bank if you give me cheques). And it would probably be nice for Pascale if you give her cash too – 25 euros per double, 15 per single.
I think that’s all there is to say (or possibly more than all there is to say, as my father would have said).
