I’m a translator. I couldn’t be an interpreter. I love choosing my words carefully and taking the time to search for the right word when translating instead of the immediacy of interpreting.

I have a long association with a company operating in the theatrical field that holds an international workshop once a year.
I've been their translator and interpreter since 1987, to the extent that I now know the subject thoroughly and can usually anticipate what's coming.
We're starting again next month after two years' pause thanks to Covid.
I rarely accept any other interpreting requests now, I prefer translating!

Usually no less than $1k per order. If you need me to travel 500 miles to interpret for two hours, you can look elsewhere. Unless you can pay my minimum, plus travel expenses, which you peobably can’t.

However, I do interpret privately whenever there is a need for it, e. g. in stores, during vacations, or whenever someone has communication problems. Of course, this "service" is free of charge.

I really dislike this 'true/false' fad that's been introduced recently. What happened to 'Yes/No' answers, more appropriate in a poll, quick or otherwise?
I wish the pollsters would stop using them. And possibly pronto, too.

I used to teach English, and standing in front of 60 baying students could be scary, but I've never fancied interpreting as a living. I'm sure I could bungle my way through it after so many years of experience, but I prefer looking at a screen rather than being the focus of attention.

Yes, as if it's wrong or right to be providing interpreting services... I mean, we're talking opinions and choices here, not fun facts.

The interpreter is supposed to provide such a smooth service they barely get noticed...
Although once, my colleague at the agency had to step in at the last minute to consecutive interpret for Will Smith at a press conference. I'm talking at least 20 years ago, he was already a hot commodity. She was taking notes, waiting for a chance to translate, but Smith was just talking and talking and forgetting to stop every minute or so. My colleague turned yet another page and let out a huge sigh, at which point Will Smith turned and remembered her existence. "Oh you must be tired" he said and got up to give her a shoulder massage! My colleague was mortified, she hates being the centre of attention.
Later she went home, to a BF asking what the hell she was up to with Will Smith, in public and all, he'd just seen the press conference on a music programme and was pretending to act all jealous.

So Will Smith does have a history of getting physical on stage? That last slap incident wasn't a one-off thing?

I am quite happy to be a translator, and my work keeps me already very busy.
Interpreting requires a set of skills that are not (necessarily) the same as those of translation.

My freelance interpretations usually pay better than translating. They are usually for small settings, such as for a patient at a health clinic or personal legal dealings. And for my job, meetings in schools between personnel and families, usually for special ed or when there's a problem with a student.
