For MS-Word there's a built-in word counter on Tools>Word Count

For freeware or shareware applications that you mentioned, you might try some sites such as :

This site has various collections of sharewares, trials and freewares to download, all for free, no need to sign up. Updated every minute.

Couting words Apr 20, 2007

Trados Workbench does count the words. It tells you if there is repetition, and if a memory is opened, will tell you how many you have already translated.

However, I do not know if it works for html. Trados is not happy with tags !

I know one software that is free and works on Windows. The link is

http://www.tilti.net/new/en/index.php?id=2_finecountv2&advid=986

Another option would be to use Wordfast's analyse function. However, I am not sure if this feature is limited if you don't have a license. You will probably have to try for yourself.

I'm sure Wordfast will do the analysing with or without a licence. The only restriction is that without a licence, it won't use a Translation Memory greater than a certain size (about 500 segment pairs). To use Wordfast you need to use Microsoft Word because WF is a (huge) Word macro.

I think Marc Prior was working on one that made use of a variety of tools combined. Basically, if I remember correctly, Abiword's OpenOffice filter came into play.

Yes, it's here:

http://www.omegat.org/omegat/omegatk/tkount_1.3.zip

It is free and open-source, but is very basic and doesn't count repetitions.

OmegaT - also free and open-source of course - has a statistics function that quantifies texts, including repetitions.

There is a statistics file for each project. Within the project, it's at

/omegat/project_stats.txt
