Hi Carly!
My mother tongue is Italian; I speak Russian, English, French, Polish and I'm currently still in the process of learning how to speak Dutch.
I also have a very pale remembrance of German, Croatian, Hungarian and Latin.
And I want to learn Chinese and Japanese, just for the pleasure of it!

My mother tongue is English, I speak native standard French, good German, passable Welsh, Maori, and Italian, (there's your six), and could survive in spoken Russian and Dutch. I am still a new student of Mandarin, Spanish and Scots Gaelic (my favourite of all!).
I live in NZ where my child is learning Maori at school, so we sometimes have Maori spoken at home.
I used to live in a bilingual Welsh-English family.

My father always stated that you could "speak" a language if you were able to improvise a speech in it. In accordance with his definition, I speak five languages (fluently): English, Spanish, French, German and Dutch.
I am also able to "murder" Italian and have some very basic knowledge of Russian and Arabian. So that's... five? six? eight? Do I count the two sentences I know in Korean?

Furthermore, how do you differentiate between "different" languages? Differentiating for example between English and French is obvious. But how about Flemish and Dutch? If you confirm those are really two different languages, then I am your man, because then I DO speak six languages and murder a few more...

Afrikaans is an older form of Dutch, used by the colonists of South-Afrika. Any speaker of Dutch/Flemish also understands Afrikaans.
Understanding of Italian, Portuguese : Reading and comprehension level of a quality newspaper.
Romanian: enough to understand what is meant.
I understand a Russian conversation.

Because, eventhough I know several languages, I divide them to 6 parts.
First, the most active languages.
Here I have Indonesian and Javanese. I speak them fluently. English as a second language. For 'third' languages, I have Italian, French, and Turkish. I use these languages actively because I have community, so I can practice intensively.
Second, languages I used to learn, but I seldom practice because I don't have such big community.
These languages are less-developed than the first ones, but I can survive.
Here I have Arabic (I've studied it for 9 years), and some slavic languages such as Russian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Polish, Czech. I seldom find chances when I could speak these languages, but they come in handy when it's time.
Third, languages that I understand, but I haven't learnt them deeply. I can do some light translations, but when I try to speak one of them I always mix with other similar languages, i.e: spanish with italian.
They are Spanish, Portuguese, Kazakh.
Fourth, languages that I'm learning at the moment.
Right now I'm focusing on German and Dutch, and sometimes I take a little bit of Swedish, Danish, and Yiddish. They are quite similar to each other, and it makes me more eager and easier to study them.
I am also learning some modern Greek at some site (Kypros). I learn it because I love Greek music
Fifth, languages that I only had 'crash-course' in it, I studied for 50-80 hours, just the basics. It means, I can only maintain small chat between friends and new acquaintances.
Those are Chinese (ugh! That's a shame! Gotta master this soon!), Tagalog, Thai, Kazakh, Finnish, Estonian.
I don't accept translations..!
Sixth, languages that I'm planning to study in the future.
I have bought the books and tried to study 1-2 chapters, did some practice, but haven't really scheduled time to learn them deeply. Later, I go fast but steady, I'll learn thems oon after I finish my high school...
I wish to study Japanese, Korean, Romanian, and Hebrew. And for the precedents which I want to polish: Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese.
I don't count the languages I speak.. I just love them and learn them, and wish I have more time to learn them after high school..! Yeah.. ▲ Collapse
